After 12 years

Well it looks like after 12 years in the same band, I am going to have to move on. They are only wanting to play 8 or 9 shows a year and I just can't do it. Anything less than 50 shows a year and I go crazy. It really sucks. I hate change and it is not easy to find people to be with for the long haul. I am in my mid 40's and it just is starting to suck...Sorry I had to get it out

Why don't you just get a second band together? That way you can still stay with this one, and just gig out more with another?

Seems like a good solution to me.

If you dig the band you're in I like this idea. If you really want to only dedicate yourself to one group, and focus all your attention on it then I guess that won't work. When all is said and done hope you are happy with your decision.

I have looked into a second band. I guess it would probably relieve a lot of my tension for my first band and get me to playing again.. I have looked a little here and there for another band, just not finding anything other than several kid bands wanting to play metel or harder stuff. So, I guess I might be a little picky.. this is all a little distressing for my taste though.

I am in a band hit the 10 year anniversary mark with the same 3 guys. We play about 80 shows a year but last night I had a conversation with another guitar player, who has a busy band too, about us putting together a side band to play. I can use the extra money and also get to keep my regular band and play songs that we don't do.

Then what makes you believe that finding an entirely new band to completely replace your old band will be any easier? Definitely recommend spreading your time in multiple projects if your current project doesn't fill your schedule and you still enjoy playing with them.

I agree with the consensus- don't leave a good band! Maybe put together a cover band that can work with a number of different players, pick up gigs for $$$. Maybe even some of the guys from your main band will want to be part of the new one too.

Why do they only want to play 8-9 times per year? Is there any other tension in the band aside from scheduling needs? Any others in the band who want to do more?

I agree with all of the above. If you want to be busy play in a bunch of bands.
I play regularly with eight different projects and that keeps me hopping.

I spent the last 6 years with a classic rock cover band that now only plays out maybe once a month.

So I finally (after a long time trying) got a blues band together that is exactly what I was looking for and will now be able to play as much or as little as I care to. $$$$$

Hang in there, if you know what you want, you'll make it happen. Start your own band rather than waiting on others. First time I've been in charge of the band and it's the best situation I've ever been in. But it did take me 30 years.

Patience!
