| AKG GB40/PR40 distorting problem

I've got the AKG GB40 guitar bug and PR40 pedal sized receiver and I've got a severe problem with it. It worked good the first couple times I've used it, but lately, it just distorts even with brand new batteries in it. Are they battery picky? It doesn't matter what gain level I set it at, it distorts.
Anyone else experience this? If so, how/did you fix it?
