I dunno but 9 times out of ten the bassits tends to be the guy with facial hair in a rock band. The heavier the rock the more the likeliness for facial hair to occur on other members as well.
I agree with the threadstarter though, ton's of bassplayers seem to be pretty stocky.

I thought the same thing. It could be because of the wave legnth of low frequency being shorter so we are more resonant.....
5'7", yep I'm short and stocky.
Also, most guitarist have attitudes like "Bass players are only failed guitarists" |

| | | I have to say, what i see contradicts what you said about bassists being short and guitarists being skinny, it always seems that the bassists are big and the guitarists are short Im 6'4, and average build, and the guitarist in my band is short and stocky . Most bands I see around seem to have a big bass player too.

It seems to me that the bass player is generally the one that stands out physically. We always seem to be the misfit, whether we're tall, short, lanky or fat... we're always the one thats different. Give me a picture of a band and I can usually pick the bass player just by seeing who looks like they don't belong. |

I'm the tallest (6' 4'') out of my three bands, but probably the lightest at about (i think) 60kg... |

We've used four different bassists so far. Three of us have facial hair and nobody else in the band does. To make things more interesting, all four of us brew our own beer and none of the non-bassists do.
Getting back to the topic I haven't been weighed in over ten years but I'm not short and very far from stocky.
