All the young dudes

I've been a huge Bowie fan for a few years, and All the young dudes seems such a great song to me.

I never really understood the whole lyrics, and recently I found some cool references of what he's talking about (apparently "race some cat to bed" is slang for getting in bed with a guy...
so much can get lost in any lyrics when you don't know the slang...

I'm also a huge fan of THE WHO, and the line "is there concrete all around or is it in my head" always sounds to me as a reference to the who's quadrophenia. don't know if this is so or not... any ideas?

the bass tone his bass player gets on this sounds great to me too.

I was lucky enough to see him live when he was in buenos aires, great performance.

He played this song with Billy Corgan live, I'm a huge smashing pumpkins fan as well.

We used to do a cover of 'Dudes" and I really liked it. I've heard Bowie interviewed several times talking about different songs, and from what I can gather, Dudes was just thrown together rather quickly without any real meaning to the lyrics.

That's my recollection, too, from the time it was originally recorded. Ian Hunter calls Bowie, to tell him Mott was breaking up. Bowie calls back a short time later with song.
