Since XM radio turned the glorious X-Country format into Mojo Nixon cursing all afternoon, playing rodeo clown music, and patting himself on the back, I have been at a loss for where to find that twang.
Anybody know of a station that caters to the Alt. Country sound as a format? Son Volt, Drive By Truckers, Wilco, Crooked Still, Joe Ely, Bottle Rockets etc.?
I've got a droid, so any tips for an iHeart Radio, Tune-In Radio or similar smart phone app is fair game, too. Is Last FM worth a shot?
I am already a Pandora fanatic, but sometimes I just want real "terrestrial-style" radio with DJs etc. And NOT the babbling tools that the XM-Sirius dial is packed with. 90% of those chuds do nothing but talk about themselves, and all of them for WAY too long.

KHYI - Dallas - http://www.khyi.com/wp/
KGSR Austin - http://www.kgsr.com/
KHYI is all alt country and "red dirt", KGSR plays a lot of Alt Country but also mixes in local Austin bands and other non-country, but good music. |

I let my subscription run out last fall, I guess I will never get it back now. Any one want to buy a nice XM-to-go radio?

Plays 80% the same tunes every day, just like every other XM station. The only reason I keep my remaining radio on is for the rewind function during Dan Patrick. (en fuego!)
Thanks for the suggestions so far, anybody else? I found one on Live365 called Cosmic American Radio. Seems pretty good, but has full ad content. I'll take it if the music is right!

It is one of the only growing genres in all of music (Austin is the new Seattle), has it's own TV show, and regularly sells out shows world wide. Tried to get a Wilco or Cross Canadian Ragweed ticket lately? It even bleeds onto top 40 country stations in the forms of Zac Browns and Miranda Lamberts, selling gazillions of records along the way.
Why can't a guy find a little Drive-By Truckers on the air somewhere?

Sorry for the OT. I'm just having a hard time putting them in a style-box. |
