am i alone not liking a lot of metal?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok I'm in a group of friends and most of them could be classed as metal heads. They continuously listen to nothing else and say other music is rubbish and samey
I personally see a lot of metal as heavy drumming, continues riffs which are all based on the minor scale and open strings.
I'm not stereo typing it but from what ive listened to thats all it ever is.I have sat through black label, megadeath, pantera, dragon force and so on but I just still cant see how they follow it as a religion and dismiss bands before even hearing them properly.

From a guitarists point of view yes its very good as a bassist i see it as bland and samey

I know metal is a huge genre and im sorta dragging it all into one but can you see my point?

Btw I do listen and play black sabbath and Metallica

I also seem as im almost as bad as my friends not even giving it a chance but I listen to such a wide range they stick with metal

sorry for going on

You're totally alone. You are an insignificant dot of sand on an uncharted blip of an island in the middle of the pacific ocean.

Try more bands, especially more progressive ones, and maybe melodic ones. Try maybe, Vintersorg, Finntroll, Opeth, Children of Bodom, Ensiferum. If you still think the same after listening to those, then theres not much to do.
I love metal, but i do listen to other stuff too, like Rush, some classical music, some dark ambient, videogame music, but mainly MEEEEEEEEEEEEETAAAAL!!!!!! AYHATHAHHHHRHAHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not a metal fan. I occasionally enjoy older metallica stuff, but that is the extent of my "metal" interests.

In my opinion, any genre that needs to create dozens of sub-genre in order to justify itself as legitimate is on shaky ground to begin with.

That being said there are certain Metal bands that have withstood the test of time some of them being Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica and Mountain.

I can dig their old stuff. But im really liking the more Technical Death metal.

progressive metal is also nice... Virgil Donati is great but his timing can give you a headache. I remember watching one of his video's

This one isn't as bad as i've seen from him. http://youtube.com/watch?v=h62F6vWgPu4

I saw him doing some blues jam in 21/16 once that gave me a headache after awhile... lol.

Well first, for future Music related goes to "Miscellaneous"... No biggie, just so you know... gotta give that part of forum some play time, it feels lonely.

That said, a lot of main stream metal, just like a lot of main stream music is junk. Sad, but that's how it is. There are some great metal out there, but just like any other music you have to look for it.

As far as your friends who dismiss entire garner simple because it's not metal. I have people i know who are like that, it's sad really, i really feel bad for them as they are missing out. I have to say, I understand listing to good metal, however if they choose to listen to garbage just because it's metal avoid everything else because it's not, it's their loss. I feel sorry for them.

BTW, have you listen to Opeth at all? I have a feeling you might like them.

I avoid the radio. And pop, anything that has some hot blond chick singing, wont bother with it... usually their voice is so bad (IMO) it makes them ... un hawt.

I hate metal , but i dont care if people like it or not.
Its all music anyway , jazz pop metal etc , it is just different colours and shapes of music.
But yeah , metal heads tend to hate all other kinds of music , not all of them , but many.

it really depends on what kind of metal. The mainstream..sorta.. metal I absolutely hate. The only metal I really listen to is what some would call 'prog'. But yeah, people really into it will only listen to a tiny percentage of music. I've got a buddy who listens to nonstop black metal (ick...) whenever I talk about music, he always says "You're metal sucks, its too slow". Yeah, ok. Symphony X is slow. Mm Hmm, gotcha.
