Post Am I being too picky?

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to form a blackened death metal band, along the lines of Belphegor, Akercocke, and middle-era Behemoth. It's my favorite type of music, and all of the riffs I come up with are of this style. I can't find anybody in my (medium-sized) city who wants to play metal but doesn't want to play kiddie metal like Lamb of God or Slipknot or Whitechapel. No offense to fans of those bands mentioned, but I want something with more substance than them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not like most kids my age who just want to be SO HARDCORE and play death metal as fast as it can be played. I also listen to jazz and regularly play in a soft rock trio.

So my question is this: do you guys think I'm being too picky?

Yes you are. However being too picky is a good quality because youve made it obvious that you wont settle. And that means that youd be a great guy to have in a band.

Well that's something I never really thought about. Very encouraging!

But if there's no band that meets your specs, then you'll have to settle to play in any band.

Come on man. LoG is pretty entry-level stuff. You guys should try listening to Behemoth- The Apostasy and work through their albums in reverse chronological order if you want to get in to music with some balls.

For me, it's like Demilich is Mountain Dew and Lamb of God is diet coke. If all you've had is diet coke, then it is awesome and you love it. But if you've had mountain dew, you can never go back to diet coke.

And I would also like to add that I used to be a rabid Lamb of God fan. I just found stuff that I like better.

"Uh it's pretty entry level blabla, becaue I know more about music than YOU"
Grow up first. Right now I don't think anyone who is thinking clearly will not want to form a band with you.
You seem just too dogmatic and to wipe the feces of your imaged music knowledge into everyones face.

Entry-level? Like metal listeners are a part of some elite club whereas the more "tr00" the bands you listen to, the higher you are on the hierarchy? You rise up from "casual listener," to "basement dweller / ENGL user," and finally to the coveted position of "snobby record store clerk?"

You people are why metal fans have the terrible reputation they do.

Metal with black metal influence.

It is about as obnoxious as it sounds.

And if you have to ask what black metal is: it is like what happens when that really self-aggrandizing music snob you unfortunately run into decides the post-rock band he is in too mainstream, so he starts playing stuff like this.

Judging by your closed views I'm guessing you're under 20, at least mentally and I'm doing a disserivce to some teenagers. This is why you can't find a band.

Actually, I do consider myself much more dedicated to music than an average listener. I listen for odd time signatures, musicianship, composition, and artistic creativity. Most people I know and am friends with listen for nothing but how catchy the chorus is and if there is a cool guitar part.

And I love Absu. I like black metal music, but the culture is embarassing.

I don't know why you guys think I have closed views. I think that I am very open minded to this brand of music which all of you are obviously close minded to.

That's nothing bad, but the stupid thing is that you brag about it. You should prove some "musicianship" instead, by evovling beyond that "I want to copy this band, but everyone else only wants to copy that band "

Forming a band with people of a different background isn't a bad thing. If they are not convinced by the musical direction you want to go at first, prove them wrong by writing the better songs as they do and they will happily play your compositions.

If you think your musical talent is wasted by playing with people whose musical taste isn't as "superior" as yours, then learn guitar and drums, record a demo, send it to a label and hire studio musicians.

I try not to be the typical TR00 KVLT 666 bigot. Sometimes I may come off as one, but I'm really not. If I can play in a soft rock trio, that has to count for something.

Im 22 and used to be like, you, your attitude will pass. You think your awesome for learning some cool things and now your heads a few sizes too big, I mean LOG, and even slipknot aint entry level, ironically, I heard whitechapel the first time last night, its your basic droning deathmetal crap really(please dont correct me, I dont care if I got whatever obscure genre this band calls their music wrong), decidedly entry level. That said, I think you should find a group of maybe slightly like minded folk to make music with, and bring your musical tastes to the table, I find that a band with diverse taste is sometimes better than a buncha guys who like exactly the same everything, it ends up sounding like a parody of whatever the influences are, especially if the group is your age, just saying.
