i'm helping out a friend on their first solo project. i'm playing bass and filling a sort of secondary producer role in terms of direction and whatnot (yes, i'm getting a producer credit). my usual gig is music i'm really into and really enjoy playing. this project however is not what i'm into. i'm playing parts that are "good," but that i'm not really digging on. that seems to be the vibe of the whole project for me though. everything is "good" but i don't like it and it comes down to a matter of taste. so, am i whore? i left the studio tonight feeling like i should have been dressed in a little red miniskirt and picking up my money on the dresser. anyone else here do gigs or other projects they don't necessarily like, but the money's good? how do you sleep at night?

Well, it's a matter of whether you see bass as a job or as a hobby. I like to see it as a hobby, but I've already got a good job so I don't need to see it as a way to make money. Once you decide to (also) see it as a job, then no, you're not a whore, because that's how all jobs work; you do something you don't necessarily like just to make money.

I have and will again. Sometimes for money, sometimes to help somebody out, sometimes it's at church where we cover such a wide variety of music there's bound to be something I don't "like" every week.

Well...Walt Disney had to do commercials and jingles for years to save enough money(and gain experience)so he could start doing his own thing....worked out for him I guess...

And congratulations, you have your first "studio musician" gig...not too shabby...

Plus, everything you ever hear/do/partake in is an experience, get the most out of it, and like someone else said, your friend thinks enough of you to ask you to do this and he's taking your input...that's a great compliment in my book.

And, as a bassist, the more experience in any genre/style is a big fat +10...

I once did a paid session to record a novelty version of Hendrix's "Hey Joe". The guying paying us had rewritten the words to be "O. J. Where you going with that knife in your hand."

I never felt so dirty.

I've been in two bands that I didn't enjoy just for the sake of playing. I didn't get paid anything so I guess that just makes me a slut.

Thumbs up

I do it all the time. Just relax and learn from it.

I work on music I would never dream of doing on my own as it's not my thing. However, it has paid me for doing so in many ways. Some examples are...

*Expanded my musical abilities
*Opened my mind to other musical possibilities
*Helped me build a "network" of people who know me and my work
*Earned me $$$ that I rarely got doing originals with the bands I have been with
*Meet some cool and interesting people/characters

Yes!, you are! ...and so am I! I'm a "whore" that LOVES the sex! Best of both worlds! Anytime I can play is great "sex" for me and when I get paid for it...oh, baby!, oh, baby!, oh, baby!!!

(On another "note"; if I can get paid for it, my wife doesn't mind near as much when I go out. )

Seriously, though; the more versitile you can be, and that also means doing studio gigs that aren't quite your "thing", the more work you'll get. Also good to get your name on lots of stuff to put on your Résumé. (of course, it's always a good idea to put stuff on there that you're proud of...)

Good luck!

wow, i'm totally a whore. it's not a hobby for me. this is my job. usually, i'm in a band where we get to play pretty much whatever we want and it pays (most of) my bills. well, at least i know and maybe now i'll find a way to respect myself in the morning. thanks for the perspective guys

Hmmm, are you a whore? I guess it comes down to the point of, did you get paid? If you got paid, then you are a whore. If you didn't get paid, well you could possibly be a Slut. But again, if you did it for personal gain only then I would have to say you are a whore. Well, if you did it with some class, you could be a Bass Prostitute.

Oh let's all just say it... YOU ARE A WHORE!!!

Please forgive me Lord.
