That's a great story. I wish others would take that to heart.
I once only played big band music and was a jazzhead. After a while I put the bass in a closet and went back to college, then started a teaching career. For a period of about 13 years I did not touch it.
Finally, one Sunday at church some guy came up to me I did not know and said: "Don't you play bass? We need a bassist in a ministry we have bad". At first I balked at the idea, but eventually went to sit in and try it out. My bass playing was as bad and rusty as those old Dean Markley strings that were on it, but I had rediscovered playing bass in a genre (southern gospel) that I'd never been caught dead playing in the 13 years before. I did replace the strings, by the way. I still do not know how he found out I played the bass after all those years, and he has passed away so I won't be finding out soon.
Since then I have not only played that style of music but also various types of root music from Celtic to American styled folk. I do tend to get bored playing the same ole same ole all the time. This also lead me to start home recording and playing other instruments as well.
Due all in part to......the bass guitar.
