Earlier today I saw something on TV that was udderly ridiculous. This thing called "Animusic" is insane. This dude makes a whole CGI band, but it's not a band. It's all automated robot things playing insane music. Like imagine a whole room filled with futuristic (yet still somewhat traditional) instruments that play themselves. That's the best way to describe it.

While watching it on TV, I was absolutely dumbfounded. At first glance, I thought it was real which is what initially cought my eye. Then after realizing that it's all CGI, I discovered that beyond just being really cool looking, the music is fu**in' crazy too! I especially liked the songs "Pipe Dreams", "Acoustic Curves" and "Future Retro". Let me know what you think of this stuff, I was blown away with how perfectly it's synched up with the music. As much fun to watch as it is to listen.
Check this stuff out, you can get the DVD and watch a few video clips in the Download section of this site.

i work for a custom home builder. in these homes are usually the home theatre and stereos built through out the home. when the home is complete, they play this video to demonstrate the big flat screens with the home theater. (it must be nice to have money). but to the point....this stuff is crazy. i actually got a copy from these guys because i would bug them to play it all the time.

^That's awesome. I can't imagine what this would be like on a big flat screen with full house surround sound! You're right, it must be VERY nice to have money.
I also just found out that a few of these are available through P2P software (full songs with full videos, no 30 second clips). So for anyone who downloads---start searching.

The real neat thing, if I'm not mistaken. Is that the animations are actually created by the music. Which is to say, they setup all the models and then they make a piece of music that, when played back, sends information to control the animation parameters. Or something like that. Obviously, that's just data, then the end result gets rendered into what you see.

I could be wrong, that's just what I remember. It's very cool stuff, nonetheless.

It's MIDI driven. If you change the music and then rerender it, it changes the instruments automatically. There's a lot of info at www.animusic.com. The first one is great. The second one looks even better.

From what I understand, the first few pieces were originally comissioned by nVidia as a tech demo. They shipped free with the first generation of DirectX 9 cards, the big deal being that the new cards could render those graphics realtime. Wrong Robot has it right, they modelled all those instruments, composed the music, and the music triggered the instruments. My brother-in-law is a CGI artist, and asked me to cough up some MIDI files so he could play with the software. It's pretty fun to mess with, although the tunes I came up with are nowhere near as cool as what's on the DVD

Yeah, that's how I found out about them. Well, actually it wasn't PBS, it was WLIW (a Long Island station that's almost identical to PBS). I was flipping through the channels and saw the very beginning of Acoustic Curves. I was hooked right away. My sister was like "*** IS THIS!?!?! BLABLABLABLALBA!!!!!" (she likes rap).
