Another "fun" trip to Guitar Center

Against my better judgement a decided to breeze through Guitar Center to see what they may have interesting. Well, there was a Surine 5 string sitting there marked at $2200 or something like that. So, I decide to try it out. Well, I spend forever trying to find a cable to plug it in. Finally, a sales guy comes up and introduces himself and gets a cable for me. He then tries to get me hooked on the Markbass amps. I assure him, I am all set on the amp front. I am really only trying the Surine out of curiousity. I strike a few notes and it plays and sounds like crap. That setup was bad, the strings were dead. Thus, the bass sounded even more dead when you plugged it in. Anyway, I hand it back to him and say I am really not interested in it. He then goes on the whole thing about what type of music do you play, blah, blah blah. He then hands me a Fender Jazz...I am kinda like "been there done that...I have a Sadowsky and Lull that do the Jazz thing pretty well" Somehow the neck discussion comes up..I tell him that I like wider string spacing...He tries to hand me an SR5. "This has a wide neck!" he says. I tell him..."no, that spacing is 17.5mm...quite narrow actually." He then tries telling me how good the Ibanez stuff is...I just walk away and shake my head.

Why do I even walk into that place!

I really wish people would stop crapping on about how much they hate Guitar Centre. I say this every time one of these threads comes up; you Americans have no idea how lucky you are to have a store like GC.

Who cares if the strings are dead and the set-up is ****, at least you can go in and see the bass with your own eyes, see what the build quality is like, have a play and get the overall feel for it (forget about the action and dead strings).

I would KILL to have a store with that much selection down here in Australia. I can't play 90% of what I'm interested in buying because it's either not sold in my country or stores near me don't stock it.

Salesmen are dumb? It's not just confined to GC, the majority of salesmen in the world have no idea what they're talking about. Live with it. There is nothing wrong with saying "I'd just like to be left alone, but thanks for your help".
