Any Advice On A Decent 1st Set Of Congas?

Sign in to disble this ad
Looking to spend $600 or less- preferrable something available through GuitarCenter.com I've had the odd notion for a while to include some drumming with my solo bass looping stuff, but I really have no knowledge of brands, etc. Any first-hand experience?

+1

Visit his site, www.bongomania.com ... Lots of helpful stuff, a good read. Even though I don't play, I like the site and my son has picked up some good tips there...

I got a Cosmic Percussion conga/quinto pair from GC. Then I added a Latin Percussion Tumba to them. It's an Aspire series and it's a pretty darned nice drum. It's enough better than the CP's to tell the difference, and for about the same price.

I would recommend getting LP Aspire congas and bongos. And for that budget you might be able to get the tumba as well.

Now the tricky part. How do you plan to arrange and tune yours? I was surprised to discover that there doesn't seem to be a real traditional set way to do that. Because I'm a bass player and like the low frequencies, I put the tumba in the middle, conga to the left, quinto to the right. Bongos on a stand in front with the larger side to the right. Currently they're set up in a root-third-fifth-flat seventh-octave intervals. It was a G last week but I think it's slipped a little. I'll re-tune before any real use.
