Hey Guys,
I've got an trade/import question. I made an inquiry in relation to buying a Warwick bass from New Zealand, in which I live in Australia. A reply from the company advised me that it was against the law for them to sell it to me directly.
Does anyone have a clue what legislation this is? I have done some searches, but cannot find the exact legislation which applies to trade between Australia and New Zealand of these particular products.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Cul | Hey Cul -- fellow Aussie, but living in NZ. As far as I know, if they have a deal with a local importer, they're not allowed to screw the pooch, as it were. Over here it's The Rockshop, not sure who it would be in Australia, but the Warwick website should have a link under their "International Distributors" page or equivalent.
Stay dry, man. Hope you're on high ground. You reminded me I should get in touch with my sister!

Here's my idea: pay for a year's subscription to myus.com, order from the US to your new myus.com mailing address, get US prices, cheap freight to Aust and - if the bass is less than AUD1,000, excluding freight - no Aust import duty. |

On a more serious note, I know you lot are having a rough time. I sure hope when the water subsides things start to work out. As always, much love and respect from your brotherly neighbours. Surely people will start making jokes soon, as always happens after tragedies, but it's not funny when life and family is involved. Stay dry.

It's not against the law at all, it's probably just Warwick company policy to protect their aussie resellers.
The only things you'd struggle to import from "over the dutch" are cars (NZ don't have the same stringent car safety standards).
+1 to the stay dry too. |

That NZ being in Europe was just as funny as The Aust and NZ being the same country. |

Cul | New Zealand has very liberal trading laws and the borders between Australia and New Zealand are very open. ( C.E.R )
There is no law to prevent you buying a bass in NZ and having it shipped across.
In your case I would presume that the reluctance to do this is down to the wholesaler / retailer trying to keep the manufacturer and the Australian wholesaler happy.
Over here the wholesaler and retailer and one and the same. ( Rock Shop )
Just get on a plane, come across and buy one, take it back with you and have a holiday at the same time.
Airfares are about $400 return and you could even do it same day or overnight if you wanted to.
If you walk into an NZ Rockshop with a bit of cash, I am sure they will sell you one and you get to try before you buy.
The AU $ will buy you somewhere around 1.25 -1.29 NZ so you may snag a bargain.
Plus stock up on duty free goodies
Sorry to hear about the terrible time you guys are having with the flooding. |

I think the factor that is interesting me the most is the Aussie dollar in comparison to the NZ dollar, which would save me about $700 off the cost of the bass I was looking at, which is a Warwick Corvette $$ 5 String in Nirvana Black Oil ($2999NZ). This is the current conversion - $2,999.00 NZD = $2,294.74 AUD.
This was from the Rockshop, and they weren't willing to budge on the export. Their loss.
Yes for all the interested persons, the floods are set to become worse at 4am tomorrow morning, with a peak in the river at 5.4metres. Its set to peak again at high tide tomorrow at 4pm. Its quite shocking and the death toll has now reached 12 from the last reports. I saw the river last night at about 3:30am, in which yachts and full pontoons were smashing against the base of the bridges.
I was due to go back to work in the city on Friday morning, but I have been redeployed to another Watchhouse until further notice. |

Although taking the neck off the bass may not be an option for some people if they are having it shipped...
