There are numerous really good recent rocking Christian bands from hard rock to metal.

One of my current favorites is Decemberadio.

If you want some other hard rock Christian stuff, check out Petra, The Resurrection Band, or John Schlitt.

I second Thrice. Loads of great stuff from them. I don't really like much of their stuff before Vheissu but Artist in the Ambulance does have some great songs.

The Channel Surfers. I believe they are not together anymore or changed the line up. Their first cd is really good, in my opinion, kinda RHCP.

King's X are not a christian band, they are all christians, but not a christian band. They used to sell a lot of CD through christian music stores until DuG came out. King's X lost a lot of fans because DuG came out, that just isn't cool, I think the proper words to define it would be that they judged him.

I don't listen to christian music, but I get a lot of students that play worship and I had somebody show me these guys. When I think of christian rock I think of these guys.

I know lots about the King's X story and didn't think it all needed to be included here. But I think no matter how you classify the band, the song "We Were Born To Be Loved" is a Christian themed song. Hence the inclusion of the song.

Check out 'Theocracy'. Christian Power Metal. if you listen to the music and ignore the christian vocal message it is actually really good power metal.

I don't know if anyone included these guys:

Dogs of Peace

These guys only put out one album in about '96, but they are/were Gordon Kennedy and Jimmy Lee Sloas. Gordon co-wrote Clapton's Change The World and Jimmy Lee is one of Nashville's top session bassists. They also produced several albums for PFR.

Recently saw these guys at a festival ... didn't realize they were a christian band (not super praise-y, but you could see them praying behind stage before they played)

Oh, and my girlfriend listens to these guys:

+1, although I happen to be a fan of their message as well. Better lyrics theologically than most Christian bands.

The thing that sets these guys apart for me, is that most Christian bands are maybe "good for a christian band" or "alright by Christian standards, but totally sub-par compared to more universal standards" while Theocracy (with the most recent album, anyway) is not good only by Christian standards, but by any prog/power metal standard. Solid band.

August Burns Red is another solid band that holds up to real standards, and the members are all strong Christians as far as I know. Some songs have stronger Christian themes than others... musically they are super tight, technical, skilled musicians.

These guys probably don't count ... their lead singer was "born again" as they were writing this album (subsequently causing the band to go their separate ways after finishing the album)
