All you need is two turn tables, get Direct Drive tables, not belt driven, the belts wear out and are crap.
And get a mixer / EQ... basically all it does is fade one in and out and choose what levels you want to hear things at.
The most expensive thing is the vinyl's unless you go for like, Technique 1200's LOL.
I ran a Gemini Setup, modest but good. Also, first thing you want to do is trade out the needle for a better one.

I never did scratching, i did what a lot of guys do, i just took sounds from records (You dont use like Led Zepplin, you get DJ records) that had the type of beats i liked, and you switched records in and out to make a mix.
for some reason, i think you have the wrong idea of what DJ'ing is..
I think you are thinking of Scratching, which can be part of it... but its more like a Solo, not how to create a song.

He's DJ swamp, hes Becks DJ as well, he does Hip Hop, there's a good amount of scratching in Hip hop style beats, if thats what you're talking about.

But anyway you will need 2 turntables, a mixer, and some sort of system to run the mixer into. Other things you would need are needles. Needles can be expensive if you want some good ones. I use ortofon, although alot of people use shure also. And last but not least you need vinyl. Once you start it can be a very expensive habbit. So for the guy who wants to scratch and beat chop, you probably are into turntablism...stuff like qbert, mix master mike, dj craze, invisibl skratch piklz. You'll need some sample records. Dj Rectangle always had awesome scratch records. And a 2 channel mixer. Mixers can cost anywhere from 200-1500 and up. Behringer makes a cheap 4 channel pioneer copy with effects for 200, but the faders aren't going to be as smooth as a Rane, Vestax, or Allen and Heath etc... mixers. Anyways there are many styles of mixing, just depends on you and the style of music you are playing. I like to scratch and chop a little, but also enjoy long mixes that involve precise beat matching and long fades of one song into another. Control of the needle and vinyl is a little tricky at first but is pretty easy if you practice. Good turntables like technics 1200's or vestax make it a lot easier.
