Any keyboard players out there?

I'm going to buy a Yamaha MM6 keyboard for myself for Christmas and I was wondering if there were any keyboard players here.

My primary instrument is keys. Been playing 25 years. Took up bass just 3 years ago.

I quit trying to keep up with all the keyboard technology years ago so I don't know what either of those keyboards are. lol!

Only recently as 2 years ago updated my rig to a Roland Fantom X6 and Hammond Suzuki XK1. i bought the Roland on clearance with the pending release of the Fantom G series! So I'm still behind the curve!! LOL!

I'm also a keyboard player who plays bass.
I don't have experience with that one myself, but Yamaha keys are generally great. I think it has some Motif sounds, wich are awesome, especially the piano.

I'm still playing my ancient Korg Triton pro, Alesis Andromeda and Kurzweil K2500R. The rest is done by software.

Sunday I got a Casio WK-210.
I've got a Casio CDP-100 for several months.

Yeah... I know it's only Casio, but good enough for me to learn.

I love the digital piano with its weighed keys, for piano playing.

I got a keyboard on sunday mainly to play with organ sounds.


I love learnings something nice on keyboard, and then grabbing my bass and try to play the same melodies.
Currently learning La Traviata.

I started out on keyboard, but I had a really hard time learning the notes in the bass clef, so I thought to help alleviate that I'd take up bass on the side. Then I discovered I love bass. So I've mostly trimmed out my collection (and replaced them with basses ), but I still keep a 61-key Yamaha PSR-330.

As for instructional DVD's, I don't know of any. However, one great book is "Keyboard Picture Chords", published by Amsco (no specific author). It's mainly a reference book for all the various piano chords you might come across.

me! I have had a piano around since I was about 7. Took one month of lessons, and quit. I picked it back up in high school, taught myself and played by ear. I did know how to read some sheet music tho (unlike the bass, where I don't have a clue and don't know all the notes on the fret board-shhhh! I play by ear on bass..learning slowly tho).
Like nutso42, I too had a hard time learning the left hand (bass clef). I got like three keyboards (all Casio) and a piano. Thinking of selling my piano tho, for I am probably gonna move and the thought of paying someone to move it...eh. Plus the room it takes. IDK tho my boyfriend likes to play on it every time he comes over.

My secondary instrument is keyboards although I haven't played in over 6 years now! I was looking at the same keyboard. I've also been seeing quite a lot of Korg Triton LE's for sale in my local Craigslist. I've been tempted but a keyboard playing friend of mine says he like Yamahas better for live applications. He say Korgs are great for the studio and recording so I'm torn. I love Korg sounds. I found in the past, that they had a little more meat to them over Yamahas but maybe that has changed! Dunno!

You gotta do the basic stuff first. Basic stuff like running your scales so your fingers know when to duck under or over each other. How to get the left hand working differently than the right hand. Alfred's # 1 book will get you started and I do recommend you start with this book. After you get well into Alfred's then you can start looking for Internet DVD stuff, there is a bunch out there.

After the basics are into muscle memory you have three specific ways to explore:

1. Classic - get a teacher and start with classical music.
2. Play from lead sheet - left hand doing chords right hand doing melody.
3. Play from fake chord - left and right doing chord patterns and leaving the melody to your voice or the rest of the band. Much like a rhythm guitarist does when accompanying his vocals.

Stop by any music store that sells keyboard or piano they will have Alfred's # 1. Take a look, see what you think. An inexpensive DVD that gives a very helpful over view of what this is all about is Learning Piano with Pete Sears. Google can pull it up. Let Google pull up some of Yoke Wong's stuff - she is expensive, but, what she offers has value - pay your money and take your choice.

what helped me, when I was in high school, I got into really wanting to play. I bought a music book for electronic keyboard and it had the chords in it and in the back had a chord sheet. I learned the three finger chords through that. Then later on, I'd play music on the piano and electric keyboard, reading the right hand notes and playing the guitar chords on top of the music with my left hand. Works better with the electric keys tho cause of the tempo stuff you can have playing along.

^^^ I don't know that specific model. but generally you cannot go wrong with Yamaha stuff, it's so well designed and made. I still have a Yamaha SY-85 synth from the early 90s that gets some use.

A five octave KB like the one you link to will be enough for learning on and the touch senseitivity on this one is said to be good, which will help you develop technique. You'll probably need an AC adaptor if it doesn't come supplied with one and a sustain footswitch/pedal is a must if you're going to use this keyboard as a substitute for learning to play on a real piano. Have fun! I enjoy playing keys every bit as much as bass and I'd probably enjoy them even more if I could bring my piano playing up to my bass playing level (a good few years work needed there).

Over here I have the same issue. Seems that non-muso elitists keyboardists are a rarity.

Everyone around here compares themselves to Billy Powell, I don't even think they know who Rick Wakeman is.

I took classical piano lessons for 10 years. There's no keyboard part in rock/jazz that I cannot competently play. However, playing bass is infinitely more fun than playing keys.
