Welp, I'm just curious any others like me out there? and tips for getting good sound? tips for writing your own bassline? any good bands you know of?

my two cents on getting a good sound are... tune way low like low F B D F or what ever and use a thick pick and cut loose bout 2 cm's above the bridge good bands..... municiple waste.. the turbo a.c.'s gama bomb the bones DRI....

How's about
AEAD or BEAD or DADG
or just a simple EADG.

Personally, I'd just bring a 5 string. =]

The tuning doesn't need to change just because the music is heavy, plenty of good punk bands play in standard EADG. If you want to play with drop tuning with punk and thrash, don't go much lower than a half step down or even drop D would work. I feel lower tunings will bring you more towards metal and the lower string tension will make it difficult for you to play fast tempo stuff.

Using a tube amp or a sansamp/MXR M80 will really you get a good, agressive tone. Those pedals can be used for other styles of music too.

Paint it black, Strike Anywhere, and Kid Dynamite are amazing punk bands you should listen to.

+1. I've tried it, and it doesn't work very well. Definitely go for a 5-string if you need lower tunings.

Something else I just thought of.... you can get some octave pedals. That should work pretty well for getting waaaay deep notes.

Huh? I played in a punk band in the mid 70's and every bass player I knew played a 4 string in standard EADG. Punk isn't supposed to be fancy or creative.......just angry.

i deffinately agree with the speed problem .... and the tuning i suggested is only worth playing if you have a specific need for it... which on occason if im feeling rather irrated ill crank it down and open up a can a whoop a__... but usually i just keep it standard hmm any tips for thrashin bass lines i've never been good at them

If you're playing thrash, play with your fingers!
