I've been singing more or less my whole life but I didn't really perform ever before I was 16-17 years old. I'm self taught, but I actually had my first singing lesson today... I'm checking out how much more there is that I could learn. My teacher (female) have recently started teaching exclusively the "Complete Vocal Technique" method, as it's by far the best method she has heard of. Check out
http://sadolin.net/uk/ for the fundamentals about this method and singing in general. This is a quote from one of the last pages of the guided tour you'll find on the site:
Quote:
Some core rules that cannot be repeated too often are:
* Singing must always feel comfortable.
* The technique must have the intended effect right away, otherwise you are not working correctly.
* If an exercise hurts, feels uncomfortable, or feels wrong - it IS wrong. You are the one who knows how it feels so trust your feelings.

Check out these pages, they're really worth reading!
Oh, another great quote from the same place: "Singing is not difficult and everybody can learn to sing."
