Any traditional Irish music bassists out there? Need advice...

Hey, I'm going to be filling in for my buddy's Irish band bassist for a few gigs, and I have to learn like 40 songs I hardly know in about a month. I've heard traditional Irish songs before of course, but was wondering if any of you peeps had any advice on what's expected of the bass player in this situation.

The guy told me I had freedom to do pretty much whatever I wanted, but it seems to me the less the better in this genre. I've seen the band and they play the songs pretty straight and traditional, it's not like one of these bands that rock up the songs or anything. Also from listening to some of the songs it sounds like it's pretty similar to traditional American country basslines with the root / fifth stuff.

Just looking for any tips to help speed up my learning process and not screw up their gigs...

I'm not too familiar with Irish music, but based on your description, I assume they revolve around simple basslines over a chord progression, in which I'd suggest writing out all the chord progressions and bringing a music stand.
