Any trumpet players here?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking into getting a beginner-intermediate level trumpet. My price range is around ~500 but could go lower (of course) or a little higher if it's worth it. I want a trumpet that is good enough quality for a gig if possible.

What/where do I need to know in terms of buying a trumpet? Don't worry I'm not quitting bass thx

check out www.1800usaband.com They do new and used but also they refurb instruments and have great prices... I have purchased from them before and been pleased... they have quite a bit of stiff in the range you are talking about...

My 2 cents:

The used market is where it's at! The older you get-the closer the professional models get to under $500 USD. Example: 1930's-40's top of the line stuff for $200-300, Pro models-no kidding! Start learning more about bore size, resale value, and read trumpetherald or a similar forum-posts. Remember, there's snobs and purists, everywhere in the music world. A late 50's Olds Ambassador is really nice quality-and climbing in value ahead of inflation, and brass or silver finishes are available in many different brands. You can probably find great quality for closer to 4-5 hundred, if you get busy and scour the web for available horns. Avoid lots of the 60's decade, the quality suffered after the Beatles debut on Ed Sullivan-since guitars & drums became the 'band' thing--the brass makers/companies suffered QC problems as the conglomerates began buying some cos. out due to financial probs, etc. Silver is great-if you can find it in a used model. Mine are...
Have fun!

John

Ahh thanks for the tips. I've always bought new and don't plan on changing that honestly, I much prefer breaking in instruments myself. It's a possibility though. I will check out "trumpetherald" for sure.
