any Ukelele tune thier uke to bass intervals? advice needed

Hey there good folks at TB,

Maybe you guys can help me with this one. I take a number of overseas surf trips throughout the year and I want to be able to practice bass while on my trips but I don't want to bring a bass (too big) and I don't want to take something expensive (like a ubass) since it is usually planes trains and whatever and an instrument will get a little beat up.

So I am thinking of getting a ukelele to travel with but I am not sure how and if it can be tunes to fourths like a bass (it wouldnt have to be EADG just the correct intervals.) Anybody out there that can help me out with this I would appreciate it.....I know there is low G tuning and I figure I can just go GCFBb instead of GCEA but I need to buy a different set of strings? Basically as you can tell I need some guidance.

* Please note: Before people start saying just get off your lazy arse and learn standard uke tuning thats cool but remember I am basically going to use this to keep my bass chops and theory up and do some composing while I am away from gigging and my basses. Also, I feel like I could practice bass stuff for the rest of my life and never master it all so why get into something else?

OKAY--thanks for the help folks. Happy Thanksgiving--I am very thankful for the cool people here!

PS: Anyone know where to buy good used ukes?

You will probably have to get a different set of strings because the the second string (counting from above) is actually lower than the first (or all the others for that matter) in standard uke tuning. I'm not sure if switching the strings would be enough.

Kala does make a Uke bass
It's called the U-bass
As far as tuning it EADG it can be done. One of the guitar teachers at the music store I work at does that for his really young students
