Any vocalists ?

Well, i've been really getting into singing, I've found that I have a 3 and a half octave range, and its getting a little better now that im practicing and warming up correctly before singing. I sing things along the lines of Dream Theater, Queensryche type things, usually high vocals, I have a nice full Falsetto, which im very proud of !!!

However, I also love lots of Theater music... I always have, but lately i've been really getting into it, and one of my worst mistake's has been singing "Confrontation" from Jekyll and Hyde... One of my favorite songs, but its torture for your throat, it seems to mess with my Falsetto, so while I enjoy singing it... I don't think i'll be going all out like its a performance anymore, its damaging my voice.

My question is, anybody else thats a vocalist here sing things that they shouldn't for one reason or another ? And for those that may not know Jekyll and Hyde, here is a recording of this song, and the words are below !!! http://youtube.com/watch?v=HhgXpVS1Y...elated&search=

JEKYLL:
Lost in the darkness,
Silence surrounds you.
Once there was morning,
Now endless night.

I will find the answer.
I'll never desert you -
I promise you this -
Till the day that I...

HYDE:
Do you really think
That I would ever let you go?
Do you think I'd ever set you free?
If you do, I'm sad to say,
It simply isn't so.
You will never get away from me!

JEKYLL:
All that you are
Is a face in the mirror!
I close my eyes and you'll disappear!

HYDE:
I'm what you face
When you face in the mirror!
Long as you live, I will still be here!

JEKYLL:
All that you are
Is the end of a nightmare!
All that you are is a dying scream!
After tonight,
I shall end this demon dream!

HYDE:
This is not a dream, my friend -
And it will never end!
This one is the nightmare that goes on!
Hyde is here to stay,
No matter what you may pretend -
And I'll flourish, long after you're gone!

JEKYLL:
Soon you will die,
And my silence will hide you!
You cannot choose but to lose control.

HYDE:
You can't control me!
I live deep inside you!
Each day you'll feel me devour your soul!

JEKYLL:
I don't need to survive,
As you need me!
I'll become whole
As you dance with death!
And I'll rejoice
As you breathe your final breath!

HYDE:
I'll live inside you forever!

JEKYLL:
No!

HYDE:
With Satan himself by my side!

JEKYLL:
No!

HYDE:
And I know that, now and forever,
They'll never be able to separate
Jekyll from Hyde!

JEKYLL:
Can't you see
It's over now?
It's time to die!

HYDE:
No, not I!
Only you!

JEKYLL:
If I die,
You die, too!

HYDE:
You'll die in me
I'll be you!

JEKYLL:
Damn you, Hyde!
Set me free!

HYDE:
Can't you see
You are me?

JEKYLL:
No!
Deep inside-!

HYDE:
I am you!
You are Hyde!

JEKYLL:
No - Never!

HYDE:
Yes, forever!

JEKYLL:
Good damn you, Hyde!
Take all your evil deeds,
And rot in hell!

HYDE:
I'll see you there, Jekyll!

JEKYLL:
Never!

Oh yeah, I played in the 80's where any singer that sung lower than Robert Plant was considered a bad singer. And my voice hadn't developed the extra few high notes that I have now, but I would try anyway and sound like crap. And I loved to play heavy rock, but the only kind of music I could pull off was New Wave and Springsteen/Mellencamp type stuff because the singers sung in lower ranges. Unfortunately, a lot of that music was so gay I felt like I should tuck my package singing it, and I never liked that roots rock stuff.

My advice is don't do it. Sing in your range and don't press it. Not only can you damage your throat, but it never sounds good.

oh no, this musical isn't out of my range, its just that Jekyll and Hyde is about a schizo murderer, and when he's himself (Jekyll) he sings, clear and pretty, and as Hyde (Evil murderer) his singing is more rough and grunty, almost think of screamers for metal bands, but if a Theater guy did it for a musical, thats how it sounds, and doing that hurts the high clear voice, so while this is an amazing musical, its extremely damaging to the lead singer.

Listen to this, you will see its pretty harsh on a voice. http://youtube.com/watch?v=HhgXpVS1Y...elated&search=

Dude, that's probably the worst possible thing you can do to your voice! And that guy does it so gut-wrenchingly painfully that he's going to have a world of hurt when he's older if he does it 6 times a week. I wouldn't sing that song like that unless I got paid $1000 a day with full medical benefits. Surprisingly, though, I think I could pull it off.

See, isn't it freaking awesome !?!?

I can pull it off really well like... once... and okay once after... after that, I cant sing anything, thats the second to the last song for a reason.

But its amazing, love that song.

there are ways to achieve that sound without causing permanent vocal damage; breathing correctly helps as well as tone placement.
But I know what you mean, I'm training to be a singer but I want to be in a death metal band :C Oh if only the voice were replacable!

Actually, it only causes permanent damage if you dont know what you're doing. A good "Screamer" can do it with no problems, and no reprocussions to his voice, the problem is that it builds that voice up and make's you lose your other higher voice ;p Contrary to normal beliefs, there is a right, and wrong way to scream.

But i've been working on Jekyll and Hyde a lot, and aside from slightly losing my speaking voice, it hasn't done anything to my range or falsetto.
