Question Any way to calculate duty fees on an instrument shipped to Canada?

Sign in to disble this ad
I had a bass made in Florida that is enroute to me in Alberta via UPS Standard. Delivery is projected for February 12. I was checking the tracking log and noted that a 'hold' was placed on the bass yesterday prior to it being moved along. I presume this was to affix a customs owance to it. Anyone know how to figure out roughly what potential customs fees could be? I have been all over the Customs Canada website and what a boondoggle that is...
Thanks.

Good luck. Iwas unpleasanlty surpirsed when I sent a electronic device ( acclerometer for a drag car) to a buddy in Saskat, just to borrow. Those thugs wacked me for $60.

If I remember correctly UPS charges $50 + a $5 handling fee. UPS charges way more than anybody else for customs. I don't think they like shipping to Canada, so they are trying to get you to use FedEx.

You will pay based on the declared value of the bass:

GST = 5%
Brokerage Fee for UPS = See UPS' website for the actual amount.
Duty = 0% (Made in USA)

Next time I suggest shipping by UPS Air. The shipping rate is higher but brokerage fees are included.

Seanm - uSps charges $5 brokerage fee. The other carriers will rip you a new hole.

I think UPS brokerage fee is $10 for every hundred of declared value. So if the declared value is $1000, you pay $100.

I think there is a minimum though. I know I paid $50 for a $150 effect once. That includes GST+PST of course

Since you're in Ottawa, it's really easy to drive to Ogdensburg and pick up your packages from there. It's a whole new ballgame when it comes to online shopping =D

If you're interested, PM me your email address and I'll send you my 4pg guide to US shopping for Ottawa citizens
