Anybody skip using a guitar stand and just leave your bass in a gig bag...

when playing?

I have the little ultimate GS 55 that is a great stand, very portable. I may have put my Jazz bass in it crooked (my own fault) but i found it leaning a bit and it made me nervous. Liking the compactness, strength and portability of the Ultimate stands, I went out and got the GS100 which is the same thing more or less with the neck support. A little bigger/heavier and the best I have found to date but not able to easilty fit it in a Gig bag like the smaller GS55. Do any of you just use your Gig bag to keep things simple and keep your bass bagged when not in use between sets etc?

If I don't feel like I can keep my bass in a safe place in between sets and such, yeah, I might put it in my gig bag. Usually though I don't have a problem keeping it on either my Ultimate GS100 or Hercules GS415B stands. For gigs I use a large duffle bag to carry my extra stands, cables, pretty much anything that I might need on the gig. I leave it in the car and only grab out of it what I need. Maybe you need a bigger gear bag?

I will do that sometimes, especially if the stage is really small / crowded and I think there's a good chance of my bass getting knocked over. The only reason I don't like it is that my main bass has big 'cloverleaf' tuners which tend to get bumped inside the gig bag, so I have to make sure to check the tuning when I take it back out. Not a big deal, but it means tuning a couple more times a night.

Good point Tony. The Ultimate GS100 seems to be a great stand. I'm just trying to make things simple and be able to carry everything in in the Gig bag and a small amp in one hand for the regular small gigs.

The J Bass asymetrical body makes those old style stands a bit wonky. Per the above, I use a hercules hanging stand on stage, and it works wonderful. For my P Bass, any stand works fine since the body is symmetrical.

If my bass is always in my sight, then a stand is ok. If I'm out of the room or away from it for any reason it goes back in the case.
There are some decent stands out there, but none are idiot proof.

Another reason for the mighty P bass! Lol

This is how one of those P bass threads starts.

I've only ever played dive bars where the band stands on the floor, so I keep it in the bag. That way people aren't tempted to come up and stroke the strings/neck or pick it up for a closer look.

They always complement me on having a pretty bass, and I really appreciate that, but they can look at it while it's in my hands.
