The only homebaked cases I've ever seen weighed a tonne. More weight = more likely to run it into things.

Hi.

I made a flight-case for an Epi LTD Explorer, and also a pictorial about the project.

Making a custom case for Epi LTD Explorer

All traditional flight-cases are heavy and this puppy ain't an exeption.

A vacu-formed plastic case would be the lightest option (perfectly DIYable), but nothing protects an instrument quite as well for the weight (and price) as a 7mm plywood flightcase.

IIRC there was a thread in the luthiers corner for a plywood cutout case as well. I believe mine is the lighter one of those two .

Sam

I made a case for my Alembic spoiler a long time ago. I used solid Oak for the frame and oak veneer plywood for the sides. I shall take a pic sometime.

Here is my homemade case. Built in 1983. Still pretty much bulletproof

I would say it is fairly heavy compared to a flight case. I dont have a scale but would estimate at least 12 pounds. I had more time than money back then. I would buy a case today but it was a fun project.
