How many people here actually but vinyl records? I usually just get used ones, because the closest place for new vinyls to me is Jack's Music Shoppe in Red Bank, NJ (the only new vinyl I currently own is The Mountain Goats' All Eternals Deck, and a friend picked that up for me in Manhattan), and because they are cheaper than used CDs (generally). I don't really prefer the sound (I'm no audiophile), but they're just cool to have.
My relationship with vinyls got an odd start a few months ago, when I was in an antique shop and found a 33 of Welles' and Koch's 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast for $2. I bought it on impulse, and while I was there, I saw a Memorex turntable/cassette player/CD player for $90, so I went back a few days later and bought it (I wanted to listen to War of the Worlds, and needed a cassette and CD player anyway). I've been hooked on vinyls ever since (though I still buy CDs if it's cheaper, or the vinyl is unavailable).

There are a few shops around where you can pick up any single album for $1 used and any double album for $2. For the sake of convenience I still listen to mp3s and CDs however.

I asked him one day and he gave me a 30 minute speech about how vinyl is better. The other thing I got out of it was that the sound qaulity is better, but I dont know how true that is.
Of course this is the same person who I always hear griping about how new releases are not released on vinyl and has to buy imports. |

I have a decent amount of hardcore/metal/indie vinyl, sold a lot of it over the years. I have some old vinyl too (used to be a lot more, ex wife took most of it) but I have stuff like Maiden, Boston, Zep, Cream, Iron Butterfly, Deep Purple. It sounds awesome. You put on headphones and close your eyes- instant time machine. I also love how you can stare at a record's cover and notice detail you never could on a cd or cassette booklet.
There's just "something" about vinyl- the crackles and pops, IDK it just sounds neat.
I'm starting to see bands doing releases on cassette... now that I don't know about... but for the novelty effect I guess it's sorta neat.
I have a box of about 100 45's in the basement, someone gave them to me years back. All 60s top 100 stuff, most of it good- motown, rock and roll, beatles, etc. I'm waiting for the day I get my vintage juke box...

The ritual of putting on a record is analagous to writing with a fountain pen. You don't use a fountain pen for a grocery list. You use it to write "real" stuff. When I take the time to listen to an LP, I don't wander off to another errand while iy plays; I sit and listen.

An inclusive term would be "recordings" (covering multiple physical media.)
And I was happy to stop using them and move to CDs, which I consider a superior medium in all possible ways.

I generally prefer CDs but there was always stuff that was only available on vinyl (certain 12" mixes for example). As a DJ I would sometimes spin records exclusively, so I have a pretty good collection of vinyl. As I get older my aversion to accumulating "stuff" increases, however, and at this point if I'm looking for a particular track (to DJ) I usually just buy the mp3 and burn it to CD. I do like having a library of vinyl though. There's something romantic about it. |

There's Vintage Vinyl in Fords, of course. They have some great used and new stock. And there's also the Princeton Record Exchange in you guessed it - Princeton! They're among my favorite places to find some great music on vinyl. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
