Anyone else with BIG hands prefer thin necks?

Sign in to disble this ad
I do. I always hear people make comments such as; "jazz necks are more comfortable for small hands", or, "I've got big hands so prefer a chunky neck", etc.

I'm wondering if there are others like myself. When looking for the perfect bass for myself, I wanted a P with a J neck.... and it's been wonderful. I don't hate fat necks, but find that I tire more easily(moreso in the past, before I really started working on technique) with a chunkier neck.

Do I look goofy being +/- 250lbs playing with a petite, dainty little jazz necked bass?

I know it's all preference, but I just wonder if i'm in the minority.

I've got decently big hands for a woman and I must admit the thin necked basses are far easier to play for me.

No, no, no. I have big hands and I simply can't stand thin necks. That's why I only play 6 string basses (and 7 strings, and 8 strings)

but i find it hard to play on a jazz bass with big hands, seriously. It just doesn't feel comfortable

Define big. Do you mean you have long fingers and could easily palm a basketball, or do you mean you have thick fingers like hotdogs?

I'm 6'5", 270 and greatly prefer a thin neck. I wear XXL gloves in the gym and have long fingers. Basses with thin necks are just faster and easier to play on.
As far as something like a handgun I prefer the feel of a larger grip semi-automatic like a .45 over a revolver. Then again I'm not moving my hand all around with it either.

+1 to everything he just said. Prefer Ibanez-type thin fast necks over others, which is why I haven't pulled the trigger on a Warwick yet...while I say "its fine" at the store, over time I know it'd bother me. Also, replaced all my handgun grips with thick rubber aftermarkets to fill out my hand.

Ha! My hands are kind of a hybrid of the two in your description. Big palms, thick, hotdog-esq fingers, but not extremely long. I can palm a basketball, but wouldn't say "easily".

Get a Peavey Foundation if you like thin necks.

I have a strange combination of basses. My two Peaveys have very thin, fast necks. The TBC has a thin, but wide neck and the G&L Tribute L2500 has a very chunky, but comfortable neck. Just play the one that feels right at the moment.

I have long fingers and fairly thick. I prefer a Jazz neck over Precision. It's easier to move between strings.

Motorcycle grips? I prefer my fat Harley grips over the skinny, puny things on others.

In my case, I have both wide-ish hands, but also really long fingers ('pianist's' hands).

My hands are big(ish), though not like a bunch of bananas...

I love thin necks - if we're talking bout the thickness of the neck from fingerboard to the backside...

I don't like "narrow" necks - ie, tight string spacing... I like Jazz necks - but they do get a little small near the nut - 5-string necks with 19mm spacing feel best to me - as long as they're "thin" - vs baseball bat profile...

My hands aren't exactly huge, but I have both thick and thin necked basses and find that it is a personal preference from day to day. Sometimes I love the thin necks because they feel fast and then hate them because I feel like my fretting co-ordination is out, especially whilst playing parts where I am moving between strings whilst fretting lower on the neck. Sometimes I prefer a thicker neck as it feels easier to fret, but if I am playing fast (especially thrash), my left are tires easily.

No real rule of thumb to it IMO.

I am a lanky 6'3" and I prefer thin necks on basses. But for standard guitars, i prefer very wide necks.

People are always commenting on the size of my hands. I'm 5' 9" tall, but I wear a size 12 ring on my left hand ring finger. However, my fingers are about average length for my height. I love the thin necks on older Fender Jazz bases. The thinness helps with reach.

I really don't have a preference for necks. If I can play a bass and put sounds out of it, I'm gonna figure out things to do with it.

I'm 6'3" with fairly large hands, and my #1 is a Sadowsky Will Lee (1.45" nut). First time I felt the neck it felt like putting on track shoes. Just so fast.

I've got large hands, but I don't find I prefer a thin neck over a fat neck or vice versa. I live the neck of a Precision bass, but not that off a Jazz. On the other hand, I love the neck of my LTD, which is really thin compared to either.

I have large hands, weigh 212 and am 6ft1. However, I play shortscale basses with thin necks. I wouldnt want it any other way. Some shortscales do look a little goofy on me though.
