| Anyone else remember the prevalence of chipboard cases?

I just had a nostalgic moment. I remember when hardshell cases were considered the more luxurious option rather than the standard type of guitar or bass case and gig bags were very rarely seen. The chipboard cases were always in a quasi-guitar shape, and often had latches of very varying quality.
My first bass, my father's Fender Musicmaster, was given to me in a chipboard case. Dad's Ric 4001 was gigged for years in one of these cases, complete with faux alligator skin on the outside and cheesy yellow foam on the inside. Before he got rid of the case, it was covered in all sorts of duck tape. My dad then moved the Ric into a nice tweed hardshell case.
I don't really see the chipboards anymore, other than for acoustic guitars. Anyone else remember these cases?
