Anyone know of any good Bass Teachers in South Florida?
I would prefer from Broward or Palm Beach County if possible.

Maybe this is not what you want, but I do know Palm Beach Community College (Lake Worth, FL) does have music courses and did at one time have bass classes.

You may not want bass classes in a group setting. I also do not know if these classes have a heavy emphasis on theory as part of the course work. And I also don't know if you do or do not want heavy theory studies. Lastly, these classes probably lean more toward jazz rather than pop pr metal or country. I don't know what your music preference is.

You could also check Broward Community College for such courses. Another thought is to check the stores that sell music instruments. They often know of bass teachers and may even have one on their staff who teaches right in the store. That, in fact, is the way I had my very first bass classes...right in the store where I bought my first bass.

Sometimes the music instrument stores also have bulletin boards with small announcements by bands looking for musicians and offers of guitar, drum or bass classes. As a last resort, check classified ads in the newspaper.

Thanks for the reply. I already looked into the local music shops and colleges. When I was in college, music was my major. That was a long time ago !! I never really committed myself to learning the theory. I had to leave college to make a living.

There is a really good bassist named Jeff Carswell that I think teachers bass here in South Florida. He has some serious creds and he can really play. I dont know if he is touring. I gave him a call and left a message for him. I am hoping he can recommend someone if his schedule is full.

The way I met the BEST bass teacher I ever had and the one I studied with for three years was I saw him in a concert and managed to get close enough to him after the concert to ask him if he happened to teach bass. Miracle of miracles, he did and was taking new students! I was particularly fortunate because he played both upright acoustic bass and electric guitar.

If you continue to be frustrated in your search for a good teacher, check out bands at local gigs and if you see a bass player whose work you admire, do what I did. Maybe you'll have luck too. I hope you can find someone soon. A good bass instructor is such an incredible motivation.

Edit : you already mentioned Carswell....

There's also a fella named Nicky Orta who I think is on Faculty at the U. of Miami, also Julio Iglesias' road bassist. I don't know if he teaches privately, but I figure it's a lead.

I'd also think about calling Randy Bernsen - also on the Jaco Big Band, playing guitar. I was also gonna try to hook up with him to work on improv and concept. Nice guy. He may have some ideas for a bass teacher, or maybe suggest Pete Sebastian, if he's not on the road.

Thanks for all the replies. I am still waiting for Jeff Carswell to call. I can read music and notation. I am more interested in learning theory and application as it relates to bass. I may give Bass Central a call. Maybe Dave LaRue or Beaver Felton know some teachers here.
