This is a statement made by a friend of mine and I'm wondering how true this actually is.
Certainly I can understand the rationale behind such logic but would anyone else agree with me?

If it's every song, then yeah, it's a self serving ego stroke mechanism. If it's here and there and serves the song, then it's great. Jealous? Nah, If I wanted to be that good I'd practice more yeah?
Music is so subjective there isn't a single thing that will appeal to everyone. Myself, I like watching a musician who is into it ( what ever "it" may be " ) and just riffing like mad. If they are making that "face" then you know it's genuine and so is admirable, by my estimation.
I think the best examples I can give are from guitar players, who, lets face it, wank a lot . Vinnie Vincent is a wanker from the word go. His leads make no sense, go nowhere and are just pure speed ( and not even TECHNICAL speed ) I can't think of a single note he played that didn't rub me the wrong way. ( this is personal opinion of course ) Satch, on the other hand noodles quite a bit, but it fits the song he's playing. |

I've never seen any sort of instrument wankery and gimmicky showing-off of technique that I would ever want to do myself. Why would I be jealous of something really annoying that I thought sounded like ****, or of something that was devoid of any taste or musical value?

I dont wank out on every song, but there is this one folky song we play that is just asking for it. Its not until after the second chorus where things start to get heavy and I go overboard with it, but our bandleader loves it, and encourages me to do so. The rest of the song has its wankery to it, just in a much more reserved, improvising this two chord song kinda way.

I have another band in which I do very, very little wanking at all... just hold some bottom down. That's what that band needs, and I thoroughly enjoy it.

The signature bass lick in a song, why is it not "wanking" when you stop just holding a groove. Or the introduction of the band when you just hold the groove when for all its a command for a four bar wank.
It reminds me of a Nile Rodgers story was that he was in an all-star band and when his turn came up he was tempted to wank but he was a star for driving the rhythm with his cut down chords and that was his "wank"

You see it here on TB as well...an example is people calling others jealous of Gene Simmons because they say they don't like Kiss. It never occurs to some people that his money doesn't matter...they just don't like the band. |
