'Anyone you call a fretwanker or show-off, you're jealous of them'

This is a statement made by a friend of mine and I'm wondering how true this actually is.

Certainly I can understand the rationale behind such logic but would anyone else agree with me?

it's not true. i can wank as well as most people i see wanking, i just choose not to because it's immature and not musical.

It really depends, doesn't it?

If it's every song, then yeah, it's a self serving ego stroke mechanism. If it's here and there and serves the song, then it's great. Jealous? Nah, If I wanted to be that good I'd practice more yeah?

Music is so subjective there isn't a single thing that will appeal to everyone. Myself, I like watching a musician who is into it ( what ever "it" may be " ) and just riffing like mad. If they are making that "face" then you know it's genuine and so is admirable, by my estimation.

I think the best examples I can give are from guitar players, who, lets face it, wank a lot . Vinnie Vincent is a wanker from the word go. His leads make no sense, go nowhere and are just pure speed ( and not even TECHNICAL speed ) I can't think of a single note he played that didn't rub me the wrong way. ( this is personal opinion of course ) Satch, on the other hand noodles quite a bit, but it fits the song he's playing.

It's almost never true... I've never seen any sort of instrument wankery and gimmicky showing-off of technique that I would ever want to do myself. Why would I be jealous of something really annoying that I thought sounded like ****, or of something that was devoid of any taste or musical value?

Who is to say that wanking doesnt ever have its time & place, sound good, is relevant, and compliments the song being played.?

I dont wank out on every song, but there is this one folky song we play that is just asking for it. Its not until after the second chorus where things start to get heavy and I go overboard with it, but our bandleader loves it, and encourages me to do so. The rest of the song has its wankery to it, just in a much more reserved, improvising this two chord song kinda way.

No, because constant fretwanking is a sign to me that someone isnt a good musician, and i like to think that i am actually a good (Or atleast decent) musician who can play what the song needs, not mindless dribble that sounds as bad as a monkey trying to hump a cheese grater (Don't ask, no idea where that came from) so i'm not jealous.

Thumbs down

If it sounds good then it sounds good, I don't care if one note or ten million are played.

I'd like to think that my never having heard the term *fretwanker* makes me an elitist snob.

Yeah, because every time I hear Dragonforce, I'm jealous as all hell that I'm not overcompensating that hard.

Maybe I have a different idea in my head as to the definition of "fretwanking" cuz apparently one can't do so and still sound good?

I do a lot of wanking.... lots and lots of wanking. Trouble is, the band needs it, and they love it; me?... not so much because, quite honestly, my hands get tired.

I have another band in which I do very, very little wanking at all... just hold some bottom down. That's what that band needs, and I thoroughly enjoy it.

There normally is the time and place for it. The signature bass lick in a song, why is it not "wanking" when you stop just holding a groove. Or the introduction of the band when you just hold the groove when for all its a command for a four bar wank.

It reminds me of a Nile Rodgers story was that he was in an all-star band and when his turn came up he was tempted to wank but he was a star for driving the rhythm with his cut down chords and that was his "wank"

That's like saying you're jealous of a poor person because you're rich and can't be poor. After all, being poor is difficult.

I've noticed that many people today automatically accuse anyone who claims not to like something as being jealous...it's like dealing with a narrow minded, spoiled child who only can see their point of view. You see it here on TB as well...an example is people calling others jealous of Gene Simmons because they say they don't like Kiss. It never occurs to some people that his money doesn't matter...they just don't like the band.

Calling something that is musical and expressive wankery, is jealousy.
