Asking a bassist his max BPM is like asking how long is his manhood

Responses usually = ' Who cares? It is all about taste, music is not all about speed lolz. playing at 500bpm wont get you paid lolz'

'its not about how big man, its all about the skillz and foreplay lolz'

You know, no matter how politely you ask the question people are always gonna feel like you're challenging them : - /

Btw, no, I can't play at insane speed and I dont have a 10 inch manhood.

You actually ask people this, or have been asked? Or just thinking random thoughts?

Whatever the answer... :confused::rollno::scowl::rolleyes: etc

I didn't know anyone ever asked that ever?

What do you mean max bpm anyway? Quarter notes? Whole notes? Hemi-demi-semi-quavers?

edit: enormous schlong reporting in right here, for reference

Emibass 12-06-2012 03:52 AM

...itīs like asking for a salad at MacDonaldīs

lowfreq33 12-06-2012 03:55 AM

The usual response to either would be "I don't know, I've never felt the need to measure".

BuffaloBass 12-06-2012 03:56 AM

...using open hammer plucks... maybe 300-330 bpm... its all about techinque man... but its only good for short runs and frankly, it aint got much groove.

:) I mean ya gots to use techinque if you're just "average" eh?

Size dont matter , SOUL does.

Peace y'all!

I don't think I know any musicians who have measured their max speed against a metronome. I mean, there are better things you could be doing. Musical things.

I blame Guitar Hero.

64th obviously

Nev375 12-06-2012 04:02 AM

The analogy fails. Because to some women, size IS important.

A better analogy would be to compare it to asking a Semi truck driver about the acceleration of his rig in the 1/4 mile.

Well, I wouldnt consider myself a troll. Awhile ago I actually made a topic in Justin Meldal Johnsen's forum asking him what's his max bpm for 16ths since I'm really curious how does an average joe like me compares to a pro musician like JMJ in terms of just speed. Especially since hes more of a guy who plays to serve the song more as opposed to being a soloist. I really wonder if he constantly woodshed to keep up his 'shredding' chops just incase he needs em

Anyways, it was just asked out of curiosity. I mean, Im a fan of Justin's work, esp those w NIN. And whether his max bpm is 120 or 200, I still have huge respect for him as a bassplayer. But some folks seem take offense in this. Simply put, I got flamed to hell by some of the folks over here who are pretty kind most of the time.

Try asking about something relevant to bass playing.

Well, Im not sure about you. But there are plenty of metal songs that involves 16th root notes basslines, and sometimes I actually play to the click of the metronome at a slow speed to build up consistency and muscle memory.

What's the best BPM for Metal?

Anonymatt 12-06-2012 05:35 AM

Well ask a girl sometime, "Do you like a guy that can have sex really fast?" I'm talking tempo here, not duration, which is the obvious joke... Pardon my terminology, I'm trying to keep it clean. She might say "Like, sometimes, for a minute or something."

A beat in 4/4 time is a quarter note.

sounds like you should perhaps think of a way to rephrase the question. maybe something like "what's a benchmark speed for an average joe musician like me?", or maybe something else.

MarkMgibson 12-06-2012 06:12 AM

Speed Metal, Thrash Metal, Death Metal - It might matter if you play that crap, but then they're only playing one note per bar, even if they play it 64 times.

mjac28 12-06-2012 06:17 AM

I have never heard of that talk about learning something new everyday.
