We had this discussion in another forum, where a bassist asked "what would be a good goal for my own ability?" Obvious questions aside (where are you at now, what do you wish to accomplish, etc..) we settled on something like 16th notes at 140bpm three minutes straight would be a good level.

Will he ever play a song like that? Probably not, but we were using it more as a guide. Besides, the amount of time you spend at that tempo is far more important; many of us could play 16th note passages at 140, but to do that for an extended length of time is something else entirely.

Depends upon whether I use my Makita cordless lithium ion or DeWalt hard-wired.

Somehow this reminds me of the old orchestral story about the violist who claimed to be able to play 256th notes.

Nobody believed him, so to prove it he played one!

But it does work because in some bands speed is important. But it's not a requirement for all bands, just like how having a foot long dick isn't a requirement for getting laid by every woman out there.

It never fails me to amaze me how quickly the "dick" analogies come out. What the hell does this have to do with music? (although it has been amusing)

That's hilarious. His age makes it even funnier - all those years playing and that's it?

Yeah, I was taken aback by that one...I remember back in the 80's, Adrian Davison was listed as being one of the fastest bass players. And he didn't run chromatics over the strings in a musical nightmare, either.

Was that the guy who used to have the advertisements in _Bass Player_ that touted "runs exceeding 18 notes per second"? I never heard him but the ads left me expecting that he would be some sort of amusical speed machine---I'm glad if I was wrong about that.

Not sure if one can/or need to be faster than Bill "Buddha" Dickens.

I think dick analogies are okay as long as they don't make the threads sticky.

Is that a seven string bass? Seven string guitars are bad enough.

Yeah, I couldn't make anything out of that vid. Bill has some other items that are better sounding/clearer on YouTube.

Yea, I'm somewhat familiar with Bill Dickens, but that video was a terrible example of anything except how to poorly record a concert, lol.
