Attaching soundproofing foam

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey guys. I just bought a house and am looking to dampen the sound in the designated practice room located in the basement. I plan to hang the foam mattress toppers you can get at walmart. What type of adhesive would you recommend to hang them. Thanks!

You're not going to be getting a lot of "soundproofing" with that stuff. At best, deaden the room a little from inside. Won't make a bit of difference to the outside....

If you're trying to dampen sound... might as well use something that will actually do something to the sound.

Is a decent start.

And if you just bought a house, not sure if glueing mattress covers to the walls might be your best way to enhance your investment. Just saying...

That's fine, all i want to do is dampen the sound inside. High pitched sounds like snare drums will sound terrible the way the room is now. We used old carpet foam in our last practice space and it worked like a charm. I'm looking for the same effect but with a cleaner appearance. So as asked before, which adhesives would be recommended for this?

Personally, I'd hang them by some kind of hooks from the edge of the ceiling or top of the walls that way they can be taken down when no longer needed. Adhesive, cloth and wallboard just sounds like a future wallboard fiasco.

Bolt the stuff to a 2x4 or something and suspend that from the ceiling rafters... I do agree that glue, rubber cement, epoxy etc are a recipe for disaster.

Fix up some plasterboard first and use that as a surface to attach them to. When you're done with having them there you can remove the plasterboard and repaint the walls, and you have your room back.

+1.

Also, put the word out for hand me down carpet...it not only helps with the sound, it gets you off the floor and gives you a nice soft surface to stand on.

If you want to be able to remove it with minimal damage to the wall, you might consider staples - or mount it on masonite panels with edges, and hang the panels. That will be enough to kill sound bounce without covering all the wall surface. if you cover 50% of the surface you'll do pretty well with killing sound bounce. Don't forget the ceiling and floor - you'll need some rubber-back carpet on the floor.

Glue it to perforated masonite (aka pegboard, the stuff with holes in it) using standard construction adhesive: Liquid Nails, 3M spray glue, whatever the crap that Auralex rebrands & marks up 50%... and mount those pegboard panels several inches off the wall/ceiling using picture hanging hardware (hooks & aircraft cable). The airspace behind the foam dramatically improves their acoustic properties in terms of both their absorption coefficient and the low frequency extension of their absorption

...though as others have already pointed out, foam won't do squat in terms of soundproofing. Foam will provide a modicum of acoustic treatment within the room, but has no effect on sound transmission from one room to the next. None. Zero. Zilch. Nada. (At least none that is valuable in practical terms.) You want isolation, not absorption.

Before you attach foam to your ceiling, please, please, please
read about the Station Night Club fire.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Station_nightclub_fire

Don't attach any foam to your house without knowing what,
if any, fire retardant properties it has.

According to the later TV reports I saw, the West Warwick
Fire Chief noted that anyone who wasn't out in 60 seconds
didn't make it.

The smoke and noxious gasses generated by the flammable foam
were heavy factors in the fatalities. The foam is always
there, and if you get an electrical short, a furnace fire or
other fire in the space, this could be deadly to you, your family and pets.

Please find a better material that is flame retardant. Flame
retardant foam is available, it costs twice as much. Is your
life worth saving that money?
