Check out this video, it may explain a lot of the threads going around these days. As much as I don't want to believe it, I'm afraid it's true.

the first 10 minutes are GREAT (for those who can't do a full hour)

The story about the fake switch is a goodie!

Oh - and any woman named "Poppy Crum" I must have. I MUST!

I've asked DA to have someone else play the basses while blindfolded for his tests... There's no perfect experiment to be done but you can always do better.

Do you know where you can see the whole presentations?

EDIT:

I enjoyed the end especially, where you can actually get a microphone to sound like another, just by playing with EQ a little to match the other instead. It's common sense, but people argue over such things all the time. I bet the same could go for a lot of bass amps.

Just to be clear, I didn't share this to be critical of D A or anyone else trying to do all these tests. I actually enjoy those threads. It was more of a reality check for all of us who spend so much time and money chasing after “our tone” or the next big whatever.

Does that high mass bridge really make a difference? Is that new amp really worth replacing your old amp because “it sounds good when set flat”? What about maple vs. rosewood, and don't even get me started on Monster cables and power conditioners.

I don't want to be doging anyone for buying whatever they want to buy, and if it makes you feel good and want to play more , then hey, that's cool by me. But I think we all take this stuff way too far.

p.s. I don't think the whole presentation is available, at least I can't find it anywhere.

Very informative. I watched most of it, but felt like they got their point across very early on. Might have watched the whole thing if Poppy Crum's part in it wasn't so short.
I remember when CD's first came out, a coworker claimed to hear things on Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, that he never heard on vinyl. Now it seems to be a common argument that CD's don't sound as good as vinyl Admittedly, I prefer the sound of Vinyl over CD simply because digital sounds a bit flat compared vinyl by my ear. I've compared both back to back, and never heard enough difference to fuss over, nor have I heard anything on CD that I didn't hear on Vinyl.
I have a friend who obsesses over vintage stereo equipment and has over 1k in just his turntable and gold speaker wires. It sounds really good, but I bet if I put my $98 turntable with copper wires on the same and amp, you couldn't tell the difference especially with a 35 year old LP.

I'll have to watch the video tonight. I had to miss that convention session because of a meeting.

You should see Poppy in person [/shameless plug for joining the AES].

hurm. i just watched till the end of the Poppy Crum part too, but the part she played with the lyrics showing and without sounded different to me even when i watched with my eyes closed on both. are those the same recording? the backwards part? or is the second time she plays it (with the lyrics showing) just louder or brighter in the highs?

....... or am i just completely proving her point?

So good !
Thanx for posting that.

You should post it in the amp-live-recording-bass sections !

reminds me of the blind folded speaker cable test where "audiofiles" prefered the sound of the striped metal Coat hagners....

Funny: at 19;51 he shows a rack of highend gear and what's the first one on top ?
ART nightbass processor.
Souvenirs ........... (not good ones! )
