Award Shows (Grammys) - Hate 'em

Sign in to disble this ad
I know this has been done before. My S.O. is really into this. Can't stand sitting thru staged crap to appeal to the masses. Liked Morris and Jimmy Jam. However...Tina and Beyonce.
OMG. Either. Any day. Counseling for me...

I don't think I've watched an award ceremony since seing an NHL awards show probably five years ago. Some shows I'm interested in the results, but I'd check them the day after.

I'm watching a little bit, off and on while I answer some emails and surf TalkBass.

Anyone else see Kanye West make an #%#%$ of himself just now?

They are completely irrelevant. It is the industry holding a ceremony to congratulate itself. Completely masturbatory.

Aretha kicked @$$ as usual and blew all the Industry creation "artiste"s away. Typical. Too bad she doesn't fit in the industry's glam box. Boo Hoo.

The biggest shame on the whole industry/Academy is that they have never recognized Jamerson and the Funk Brothers. Can you spell "Clueless?"

It would be tough to find any box big enough for her to fit in. (RIMSHOT)

I jokingly said to my ol' lady:
If they give Aretha a Grammy, I bet she eats it.

(yeah, she didn't laugh either )
tough crowd

My favorite all time vocalist was Ella Fitzgerald. But, she would have had the same issues with the current Business. A whole generation of MTV gone bad and American Idol has taught the up and comers to listen with their eyes. I feel like I'm getting old before my time.

I usually hate them but watch anyways. I thouroughly enjoyed Morris Day & The Time's (the entire original band reunited) segment even though they integrated Rihanna's 'Umbrella' with The Bird! That and The Beatles 'Let It Be' segment.

Not true. From Wikipedia:
--------
The Funk Brothers have received three Grammy awards:
* Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004
* Best Traditional R&B Performance for "What's Going On" with Chaka Khan, 2002
* Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For A Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media for Standing in the Shadows of Motown, 2002.

And if you're talking about the "industry" -- Jamerson's in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the only sideman bassist ever to be inducted. What else are you looking for?

That was friendly.

Please try going to www.grammy.com and do a search for James Jamerson.
If you don't feel like doing that, I'll tell what you will get. 0. Nada.

I simply was expressing my personal bass playing opinion that the guy who laid down lines for so many influential tunes, perhaps, deserves a little recognition. Honestly, I am kind of surprised at the rebuke here.

No kidding - was Jamerson alive when he "received" those Grammy's, or was inducted into the Hall of Fame? No, he died in '83. I'm sure he appreciates all the recognition now that it's too late. Maybe his life would have ended differently, and maybe he'd still be laying down grooves.

Here's what I think of entertainment industry award shows:

Just another high school popular kids party all over again!

I walked into the room while my wife was watching it, and I caught his speach. He is a complete jack@#s, and I have zero respect for him. I cannot believe that someone could be that arrogant and disrespectful. He made me sick, to be honest. There are very few times that I wish ill on people, but he is one of them.

No doubt, he's a complete jerk!

He deserves ZERO respect.

I'll stop just short of wishing ill will, it's not my nature, but man, I'm teetering on that too.

I honestly don't care for Kanye really. Are y'all talkin' 'bout the part where he wanted them to stop the music while he was givin' his speech? I mean, can't blame him there really. He was talkin' 'bout his mama who passed away recently. I'd probably be the same way. If it's that part we are talkin' about...

I didn't consider it a rebuke. I was simply responding to your post, which was factually inaccurate. Yes, they received recognition late in life -- too late for some -- in large part due to Berry Gordy's treatment and handling of them. I'm not happy about that either. But I do give the industry a little credit for the recognition they've provided.

His normal rambling about 'deserving' a Grammy just as much as the next guy then segueing to his mom which should have been more important than talking about whether you 'deserve' a Grammy!
