Back to Bass(ics)...

Well, after having started out as a bass player in the early '80s, then becoming a guitar player and making my living at that for quite a few years, I find myself returning to bass...

Yep, after 20 years playing guitar, I am a bass player again. In a way, I feel like Rip Van Winkle. When I was last a bass player, all the pros were using GK heads with Hartke aluminum cone cabs. This was the "dream rig." I, of course, was playing a Vantage bass through a Peavey head and 2-15 Peavey cabs.

Well, I went to the music store over the weekend, and I was confronted by a number of amps and cabs made by companies that I'd heard of but knew nothing about: Aguilar, Eden, Trace Elliot, etc....

Currently, I'm playing two Hamer Cruise basses (not at the same time!) through a Peavey Mark III head and SWR cab at rehearsal, and using a Yorkville XM200C combo for gigs. Overall, I like the sound I'm getting, but I'm thinking somewhat better gear may be in order. Time to save my pennies...

I'd like to get a better head to use with the SWR cab. The Peavey is OK, and actually sounds pretty good with the Hamers (I swear those basses would make a rolled up sheet of paper sound good), but it isn't powerful enough.

However, I'm not really asking for amp recommendations and I'm very happy with my Hamer basses.

Basically, I'd like to know if any of y'all would like to offer some advice to an old timer making a return to bass. A lot has changed, gear-wise, over the last twenty years -- Of this, I am aware. But, is there anything else I should know about or consider?

Any input would be appreciated -- Thanks!

Welcome back brother!

Sounds like you have things well in hand. I prefer solid state amplifiers personally, but my basses have mostly remained unchanged for the last 40 or 50 years.

Yeah, there's a lot of new stuff out there, but there's still a lot of good stuff from back in the day.

It all depends on whether or not you feel that you need power locks and heated seats. 4 strings and a passive pick up or two are all you really need.
