"BACK IN BLACK", FUNK VERSION

Sign in to disble this ad
So one of the bands I play in wants to do Back in Black, but as a funk tune, probably Tower of Power style. Whenever I'm asked to do a classic song I've heard a million times, I'm usually surprised by what I hear when I actually sit down with the tune to learn it.
This time I'm thinking that this song is pretty damn good the way it is, and although it's not the driving T.O.P funk that makes you want to move your feet, there's plenty of that good ol' "head bobbing" funkiness already present.
I've heard the techno-house version of "Don't Stop Believing" played at weddings by DJ's before and it's just plain wrong. I'm wondering if this is going to end-up being along those same lines.

It's already got everything it needs for a good funk song: a heavy one, and a good deal of rests.

Well, we did it and it went well. It's a non-rehearsal band so nobody was sure what to expect as usual, we just pick tunes, show-up and play 'em. It ended-up being a little slower with a slight 16th not feel and a touch of "bounce", not quite swung tho. Growing-up on all the old AC-DC I've always had a great deal of respect, their blending of blues and rock to create a totally original sound is pretty pure. I got a chance to play with former drummer Chris Slade a while back, I was glad I had plugs in because he's a HEAVY player. Extremely nice cat, can't say enough of how soft spoken and down to earth he was.

Check this out. Hard Corps, a now defunct band from Nashville, recorded this back in '91, I think.

Funky. Not TOP funky but, well, you'll hear.

Back in Black.
