ewww uh all I can say is:
it makes me feel better about that night that my mind went completely blank while playing...I will not punish myself again for my "fail"..at least I improvised the best I could!

Difference is these guys have been around since the 80's and were playing in front of 40,000 people or so. Two words...stage monitors?

" Hey, did you bother to consider that maybe the rest of the band was playing in the wrong key.... Jeez!!!! "

Perhaps but what are the odds that four guys got it wrong and one guy didn't?

Okay I cringed but, watch the video he is playing it right with the the singer and he points at the guitarist and then points down trying to get his attention .027-.028 on the video before he starts playing but the guitarist doesn't see the signal and it is down hill from his first chord

Yes on the stage monitors. You would have thought that the lead singer would have gone over and nudged Joey to get him in th right key... unless he couldn't hear the bass either. I've played more than a few shows where all I could hear from the monitors was the guitar and VOX.

.... and, yes, I was being sarcastic!

Good call Rts but shouldn't he be pointing up because he is in a higher key than the rest? Sonic...actually your sarcasm might have some truth to it. If you listen to early Sabbath versions of Heaven and Hell they played in a higher key than Heaven & Hell would play it....chalk it down to Dio getting on a bit in age and the vocal requirements I guess. Maybe the bass player was doing the original version.....

The original bass line is a step up from where Joey is play, I think.

I look at it like this The bass and drums start the song the singer comes in for the first verse and he is in key with the bass at that time when the guitarist comes in he is playing it in the wrong key I agree with stage monitors as being the problem. however the guitarist is the one who should have adjusted since the key was a established before he play his first chord I blame the guitarist not Joey. Either way it was a train wreck!

I just listened to the studio version of Manowar's H&H cover. The bass player isn't playing in that key either.

Wow...so you mean these guys have played the song before? Man...someone had a few too many or something else on his mind. RTS I think the singer is in key with the guitarist from the start and not the bassist but I might be wrong......

The lead singer is in a tough spot. Does he sing to the key the guitarist is playing, or to the bassist. Me, I would go with the bassist, but that could just be my bias showing. I'm still thinking he can't hear the bass when he starts, and starts the VOX with the guitarists. Once the VOX key is established, however, the bassist should have moved to that key. This is assuming anybody up there could hear anyone else.

Oh well, I'm just glad there is no video of me floating around the intertube with me making a similar mistake... Or is there????

Yup....it's like damned if you do and damned if you don't. I remember watcing a Van Halen video (back when Eddie's daily food intake consisted mainly of no food and plenty of alcohol) and he totally butchered a song live.....not fun to watch.

i couldn't even watch the whole video.

My 5yo could sing it better, too. And he does. I think he likes the fact that he can say "hell" without getting in trouble.

he does a damn good Lady Evil too

These guy's could have gone deaf by now after years of playing at these volumes and don't even hear the difference. Maybe more speakers behind them might help?!

Sad... feel sorry for the guy's foresure.

But this is a great lesson. As bad as this is, notice that more than half of the audience is completely oblivious to it all. They're rocking their socks off, God bless em! If they don't notice THIS, then maybe you can forgive yourself if you play a little "woopsie" on stage. Chances are no one heard or noticed it but you.
