I saw them as the double-trio lineup several years ago on Halloween night at Will Rogers in Fort Worth.

Before the show I saw a guy carrying around a CD in one of those padded shipping envelopes addressed to Robert Fripp in large letters. I asked him what his plan for that was. He said he was going to get it to him somehow.

Late in the show we see something come spinning out of the darkness...and beans Fripp right on top of the head, stopping the concert until he feels like playing some more. It was that guys CD package.

I can only imagine how that guy felt. 'I know. I'll toss my CD up there near him. He'll notice it and listen on the tour bus. Wait. No. No. NO. NO! Oh crap. I've gotta hide.'

They played red, I'm pretty sure they didn't play dicipline (well I was there) they also played elephant talk.

The only thing I was dissapointed in was they didn't play anything from their first album which is my favorite. I would have loved to hear 21st century schizoid man or Epitaph.

Oh and I get the "I hate you so much" thing a lot, after all I saw Judas Priest and King Crimson in the same week

I wanted to go to that NYC show, but the timing didn't work out. How's the new second drummer? And how does TL deal with playing Trey Gunn's parts?

Second drummer is from Porcupine tree and both are very talented, the timing was impeccable.

As for Levin playing, jeese he can pull off anything, AMAZING player, he plays anything.

I saw the Thursday (8/14) show in NYC.

Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelloto, & Gavin Harrison.

This was the 5th time I've seen KC since 1981, and I'm sorry to say, this was the worst. They just seemed -- oddly, since this was the last leg of their tour -- under-rehearsed. Certain transitions between sections and (especially) endings were just sloppy. Also, Fripp & Belew seemed conspicuously uninspired.

The two drummers work well together: Mastelloto was playing an almost entirely electronic kit, & both guys were surrounded by a vast assortment of exotic metals. Mastelloto maintained his "I am a rock" approach from the previous dual-drummer tour, while Harrison sort of took over Bill Bruford's "I will do everything in my power to perplex the rock" approach from that same period, albeit with a more traditional West Coast American approach rather than Bill's cerebral British polymath tactic. Definitely a cool team.

And Tony Levin was a freakin' madman! I have never seen him attack the Chapman Stick with such a fury. It was almost like he was (gasp!) overplaying. But of course, being Tony, it was still super-tastefull...just way more notes & high-register fills & flashy stuff than I'm used to hearing from him. He also played about 85% of the show on Stick, only pulling out his MM 5-string bass for 2 or 3 songs.

They only did two numbers from the Trey-sans-Tony period, and Tony handled those parts professionally & sensetively, as expected.

The set list included:

Level Five
The ConstruKction Of Light
Red
Neurotica
Frame By Frame
Dinosaur
B'Boom
Indiscipline
Walking On Air
Three Of A Perfect Pair
The Talking Drum
Lark's Tongues In Aspic, Part 2
VROOM
Code: Marine 451
Elephant Talk

KC was on my "bands I need to see before I die" list, but I really don't think it's going to happen. Tix are too expensive, and they don't seem to play any closer to me than NYC, which is quite the hike.

Same goes for me. I'd love to see this band. All I can hope for is possibly an album and maybe another live DVD.

I saw them the second night of the tour in Nashville. Victor Wooten was seated next to me interestingly enough. It was a fantastic show, something that I didn't think I would ever get to see. I was very amazed with Adrian's Parker and its ability to stay in tune with all the wailing on the trem he did. Quite a good show even if they didn't seem to be in full stride at the time. The missteps were either too minor for me to notice or they only had one or two. I doubt I'll ever get the chance to see them again, but I really hope I do.

Hoover,
I completely agree with you, as your perceptions mirrored mine from the first Chicago show. I, too, thought they were a bit sloppy/under-rehearsed. I know they're world-class musicians and maybe non-musicians/fans wouldn't notice, but it was bothersome to my ears on occasion. Certain things I noticed: T-Lev's solo-type part during "Vrooom" was off time, the unison runs in "Level Five" weren't tight, and the whole band sounded sluggish during the parts of of "Red." T-Lev, as much as I love his playing, seemed to overplay nearly everything on the Chapman Stick. It was unfortunate, too, because I'd never seem him play with Crimson before. I hate to say it, but I missed the previous incarnation.

That said, they were still good. I just hope next time they put it together a little bit better.

PS--Who in their right minds would pay $80-plus dollars to see a group of incredible musicians perform, only to talk to others both present and not present via the cell phone? This was incredibly obnoxious and I've never noticed it as much as I did at the Chicago show.

I believe King crimson has now become a nostalgia act. Fripp used to move on with totally different directions on each new band, but now it seems there is no new direction to go.

You mean Adrian Belew?

For this tour, Fripp hired a bunch of hack drummers. They don't have their usual double-drumming combination of Tommy Lee and the guy from Hilary Duff's band.

Are you kidding? They have changed MASSIVELY over the last 3 albums. They refuse to play anything written before Red. They're probably the last band on earth that I'd call a nostalgia act.

One thing though is that, if you look at the setlists from the past tours... they're the same 5 or 6. Sure, they don't play stuff pre-"red" but... they never play anything else FROM Red either. I can't really talk about the new Krimson considering I haven't seen them, but come on Fripp, do some OTHER SONGS please instead of your "Greatest Hits" post-Red and whatever album you're doing.

they won't play anything before? shame because Epitaph is one of my favorite songs ever

also I'd like to know is Robert Fripp a prick? genius yes but I don't know he's quiet and keeps to him self a lot, he also seems to control the band. When i saw them he didn't talk to the audience once.

No hate towards him I'm just wondering

Other than Lark's Tongue in Aspic pt 2 and The Talking Drum.

Otherwise, Robert Fripp doesn't strike me as being a sentimental type of guy.
