Band Instruments Needed For New Orleans School

Sign in to disble this ad
The John Dilbert Middle School in New Orleans is in desperate need of instruments for their band students. Last year the children worked exclusively on music theory with no instruments to practice on. If you have a band instrument that you would like to donate, respond to me and I’ll forward you the contact name and email to arrange shipping to the school. This is a tiny bit of relief for some kids who have been through a lot.

I apologize in advance. This probably the wrong forum, but I thought it would get the most visibility here. Moderator please move it as you see fit.

It is odd they'd be asking for instruments now, when the school year is almost over.

I did a google search and found a couple links mentioning the school, but not anything about this.

I think this kind of solicitation might be against TB rules, at any rate.

Perhaps, but as a teacher, I say let's look closer. Many schools run into June, and instrumental programs don't always start in September. I started my String Program in late October last Fall, and my recorders will be in two weeks. Besides, starting to gather instruments now for next August makes sense, if the Band progam begins next year (especially if they are donated instruments). Let's get more info.

Maybe a discussion of music education, public and otherwise, would be a good thing. As a bassist, I was self-taught, like many here. However, my public school and church music teachers equipped my ears to do that. How about you?

You live in Virginia and you are gathering instruments for New Orleans? Ok, I'll be sure to send you all the ones that I have.

hmmmmnnnn.....getting rich on beat to crap baritone horns and cheap

LOL, Just joking, really. I don't blame you for being skeptical. That is a
good thing.

However, Music programs in many school districts have never recovered
from the modest levels they were at 30 years ago (yeah, I'm old enough
to know that...drat). I have seen entire school system's musical
instrument inventories for sale on Ebay.

IMHO, that is tragic.

I don't know whether or not this is a scam or what not - but I looked up the number for the school. First off, the only school I found was an elementary school. I called the number, phone rang.... no answer - not even a recording. Maybe I'll try early next week and see if I get an answer.

if it's legit...then find the school in the white pages, and contact them DIRECTLY...

donating instruments to schools is a terrific idea...

donating time, however, is even BETTER

what the heck...do BOTH!

there are so many poor schools out there that need our assistance...

Between Passover and Easter, I'm not surprised no one answered. The school is closed. Try again Monday.

Donations

I'm just an occasional TB user and mostly a lurker, so I understand your skepticism. Belive me I'm just trying to open a channel of good will between this forum and some people with a need. Here's the deal. If you have an instrument you want to donate, you contact me and I give you the email of the teacher who's collecting them. She'll respond with her phone number and the address of the school you'll ship it to. I don't know her personally. I found out about this from a musician friend who lives in NOLA. This is a middle school. Apparently the high schools down there got taken care of by the Tipitinas Foundation and others, but the middle schools slipped between the cracks. The kids have gone all year studying theory with no instruments. I don't think this is a new situation. I just happened to find out about it yesterday. Yes, most schools are closed for Good Friday and may be closed next week. If you have an instrument to donate contact the lady and then make your decision about whether to send it. It's your choice. If you don't have a band instrument to donate - just let it go. I was in New Orleans last April and I can tell you those people have been and are going through hell. It's real hard on the kids. Before you shut down any other TB'ers who might want to help, do some real research. If there's a TB moderator who'd like to investigate, I'll share the contact info with him.

So your logic is - The money is there, but the people who need help aren't getting it, so let's not help them and this will somehow punish the people in power. Like I said, if you don't want to help then don't, but what's the point of discouraging others who might?

Are you guys serious? You only need to open you eyes to what happened there. 12 months is not a long time to rebuild an entire city. This thread is real bad advertising for TB and it's not the posters post that makes it that way.

Ampig, I'm know nothing about the kind of instruments that you need can, you give some examples please.

Thumbs down

Let me say this, as someone who has been involved with TB almost since it began:

Ampig is one of the most respected guys on several bass forums where most of the participants have been around far, far longer than most of the people who are slagging him on this thread. The guy is here trying to do a good thing and we've got a bunch of people mouthing off about something they know absolutely nothing about.

This guy is beyond reproach, and I'd trust him with any amount of money or gear. If he needed something, I'd send it, no questions asked. So would many other people who know him as totally trustworthy.

This initiative to re-equip NOLA schools with musical instruments is in progress on other boards besides this one. If you can't find it, fine....just don't bad-mouth a well-respected member of the online bass community and a charity of which you have no knowledge.

mlowe - I think they'll take anything you have to offer. If you're serious email or PM me and I'll give you the email address. You can work it out with the people at the source.

Ditto that. Every damn word.

I'm leaving for New Orleans on Monday morning. From what I understand, they're looking at at least another 9 years of hard work to put the city back together.
