Not having actually heard the band myself, I can only speculate based on your remarks. That said, I don't think it's "too much sustain" per se. It's not enough careful, musical phrasing
Perhaps this is just another way of saying the same thing. But as you know, playing music well is more than just playing the right notes in the right places. It's also a matter of how
you play those notes.
Proper phrasing includes putting the attack precisely
where it should be; with just the right amount of force...or nuance; knowing exactly how long to hold the note, when to release it...and executing accordingly.
It's the nuts & bolts of musicianship. And players who can't play with that degree of mindfulness, skill, taste and musical instinct
will always struggle - and will rarely succeed in playing actual music
