So I come from a background of playing Blues, Jazz, Classic Rock, Funk, and (my favorite) Soul music (Motown, TOP, stuff like that). But there's a band that really doesn't fit into any of that I REALLY like......Incubus. I just watched the "Live At Red Rock" DVD (again) and Ben Kenny is NASTY on the bass (Lakland J bass with flats and a pick mostly). But the whole band is really good. The songs are (mostly) good. They did a great Police cover. Anyway......
My point.....
Do any of you REALLY like a band that doesn't fit into anything you play or usually listen to? Who is the band you don't talk about in front of your musician friends?

| | | | I can't really understand the question. Today I've listened to: The Beattles, Led Zepplin, Frank Zappa, Bootsy Collins, Hank Williams Jr, Johny Cash, and NWA... am I supposed to pick one or two genres that I like and ignore the rest? I've already been to Jr High - it sucked. I listen to whatever I want whenver I want now (and it's diverse). If I don't like something, it's because I don't like the song or the band - not the genre. |

That's fine, if that's what you want, and he was speaking strictly about people pushing boundaries musically, nothing more.
The other 10%, again in ANY genre, is doing something different and original, and one ignores that 10% at the risk of being stuck in a rut, or left behind musically, like a lot of bar-goers who seem to be stuck in the '70s (as far as listening to music is concerned, anyway.)
I search for that 10%, and I don't let anyone's idea of genre, propriety, or what I should listen to get in the way of finding something new or different to listen to.
Having said all that, I don't admit to many of my friends how much I like The Bangles or Stryper

I understand that a lot of us have very diverse musical tastes (as do I). It didn't really seem like a hard question at all. I was just asking if you have ONE band in your list of FAVORITES that isn't anything like the rest. Didn't seem all that tough when I typed it. Maybe I was wrong.

I kind of meant that part as a joke but I can understand why just reading it wouldn't make that obvious.

I don't know, call it a secret fetish but they freakin' tear it up on stage and in the studio. One of the greatest bands to mix jazz with punk/metal since John Zorn and Naked City.

The Jackson 5. Love the bass lines but I won't mention it to anyone who's not a musician. They don't realize what a great band of studio aces created those records.
