Bands that change singers and didn't suck or die afterward...

Black Flag just came on Pandora... Morris era. 25 or so years since I heard them for the first time and I still love pretty much everything they've done regardless of whether it was Cadena, Rollins, or Morris on vocals.

There aren't many bands out there that change singers and keep the same name, and even fewer that change singers and not totally change and/or suck.

Don't anyone dare mention Sabbath... :hiding:

Iron Maiden!

And, er... Journey, I guess.

Woofer 01-16-2013 09:23 PM

Killswitch Engage

Ragoo 01-16-2013 09:24 PM

Journey is one that immediately popped into my mind. That little asian guy sure is convincing.

fingerbun 01-16-2013 09:26 PM

ACDC
Pink Floyd
Fleetwood Mac

Chico16 01-16-2013 09:28 PM

Lol just kidding

Boston. However, one of the best shows I ever saw was the tour that they did with BOTH singers. Amazing. They backed each other up and you could tell they were really enjoying performing with one another.

Bad Company. Although, of course, Paul Rogers came back.

I like Van Hagar, yes I said it.

Most people would consider Faith No More to fall into this catagory, but personally, Mike Patton is the lowest of the low.

You know... I saw Van Halen w/ Hagar a few years ago and it was infinitely better than the "reunion" show with DLR. Can't speak to the old days before Hagar, but these days... I'll take Sammy over DLR. Still would rather have MA over Wolfgang.

As much as I love Syd Barrett, Gilmore-Waters era Floyd were also good. Or was it a reference to Floyd's fanbase including many drug users?

Genesis. I like Trick, Three, and Duke.

oniman7 01-16-2013 10:04 PM

Sabbath :P
A new band I like is Tesseract and they've been through a couple
Nirvana :hiding:
Nightwish didn't turn out too bad

I think a lot of it comes down to Hagar's work ethic. DLR, while fun, always seemed to be more into the idea of "being a rockstar," whereas Sammy has always been the consummate professional.

I've always said that as a fan, Roth-era Van Halen will always be something special. As a musician, I'd rather work with Hagar. To me, he's the bandmate that any serious musician dreams of.

Another vote for Sabbath. The Ozzy era is peerless, but I love some of the Dio stuff too.

mogpipe 01-16-2013 10:11 PM

Alice in Chains! That last cd, Black Turns into Blue, something like that, freaking awesome. New singer doing harmonies with Jerry Cantrell, you'ld about swear Layne Stanley was there. Good stuff!!

steamthief 01-16-2013 10:12 PM

I like many of the Deep Purples - Gillan, Bonnett and Turner all were pretty good.

TolerancEJ 01-16-2013 10:21 PM

I'll second Iron Maiden.

papilgee4evaeva 01-16-2013 10:23 PM

Tower of Power.

As mentioned, Nightwish. Really looking forward to their next album and hope they'd stick with Floor Jansen.

Sentenced. They changed their style quite a lot with their then new singer Ville Laihiala but it turned out great.

Amorphis has also changed their singer a few times and still kept up solid performance.

Also Katatonia, sort of. 'Sort of' is because they didn't actually change their singer but the singer Jonas Renkse changed his style quite dramatically from all-growling into all-clean after nearly losing his voice somewhere around the mid-90s.
