Hmm, forgot about Scott Stapp. He is definitely in the top 5 now that I think of it.
As for Robert Plant, he is one of those guys that is usually terrible live, but his studio recordings are all excellent, IMO.

Either that or I'd prefer that J.P. Jones made a legendary career as a session musician and the others found their way out of the music busyness before they recorded anything...
Oasis and AC/DC if the bands were any better, but they're actually not much better then their singers anyway.
Perry Farrell is a good songwriter, but I can't stand his voice.
Anthony Kiedis can't sing!
Ian Brown may sound good on the record but live he's completely out of tune. |

I was never too much of a fan of all the underbite rock of the 1990s, but it was all those vocalists yarling like Eddie Vedder (and Eddie himself who was yarling like David Clayton-Thomas) that made me really despise it, as well as all the "post-grunge" stuff with singers doing the same affectation. My enjoyment of "grunge" ends with Tad and Mudhoney; they do not have vocalists who yarl.

Also Creed, which is why I like Alter Bridge. That Myles Kennedy has some pipes.

I really can't stand Nirvana's vocals, I'd rather listen to my friendly neighborhood homeless guy growl at me in a feeble attempt to get liquor money off of me. I can't stand Alice in Chains vocals at times, just the harmonies sound like a cat being skinned alive. David Lee Roth, Scott Stapp, Les Claypool, Screaming Headless Torsos, Lou Reed. Okay, I jumped on the bandwagons I favored and added in a few. Have at it gentlemen, happy holidays.

- Any metal band where the singer just growls or screams with no actual singing, like Cannibal Corpse or The Devil Wears Prada.
- Any singer who has a thin, nasal, or whining voice like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, John Mayer, REO Speedwagon, Tom Petty, Bono, or Muse.
- Any singer whose voice has the screeching "nails on the blackboard" quality like Paul Stanley, Axel Rose, or Smashing Pumpkins.
On the other hand, I love the singing of Geddy Lee, Les Claypool, and others who probably fit into one of these categories.

| | | | Zakk Wylde when he does that thing that sounds like he's trying to eat the microphone, otherwise I like him.
Axel Rose is incredibly irritating.
Most of the newer metal vocals, totally poppy and out of place with whiny American style accents.
I must say, while Anthony Keidis may not be a great singer, I find his vocals fairly harmless; 'fine', if you will.

| | | | I find some of these comments to be beyond ridiculous, but amusing none the less. Keep'em coming guys.
I do agree with the Scott Stapp comment, though. Although in fairness, I gotta admit that some of these bands you hate, would not be as big as they are without the front man. Some of them are quite original, even if you think they're bad. Sometimes a "bad" singer can open more ears with their lyrics. ::shrugs::
Take for instance some artists like Bright Eyes, Coheed and Cambria, Radiohead, Modest Mouse, Smashing Pumpkins, RATM, etc. It's not always the way the artist sings, but the words that are coming out of the horses mouth. I hear all the time about how bad these bands are/how the vocalist cannot sing worth a damn. Btw, I like all of those bands, but hey, YMMV. Hope everyone had a great Christmas day/Holiday.

The pitch of his voice is high, which isn't always my favorite because I always fancied deeper voices and the singers I really like the best are people like Serge Gainsbourg, Charles Aznavour, Dean Martin, Jim Morrison, Fred Neil, Johnny Cash or Nick Cave. But if you are looking for a singer that can sing, with good technique and recognizable color then you can't pass by Thom Yorke. I compare his singing to that of Jeff Buckley. |

| | | Fixed that. I am sorry, I was half asleep whenever I posted that.
I love Buckley, and dig Thom as well. A LOT. I am actually watching their Coachella performance as I type this. This band is still going strong, and I love it. From Pablo Honey, to The King of Limbs. I didn't mean to come off like I was bashing anyone of those artists I mentioned.

As far as the thread goes. I used to have a real big problem with Claudio from coheed, he grew on me though. And ended up learning a lot from that band and crazy ol Todd. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
