I'm really into Jamiroquai at the moment, and it occured to me that they would be nothing without their bassist pumping out those slick grooves.
So I put it to you, who/which bands really rely on thier bassist for their sound?
(Equally, who could do just as well without their bassist?) |

But they'd all be helpless without us...

Pink Floyd (oh wait)
Muse
Cream (I guess power trios are pretty suspectible to this, most require all three to be good)
Tool
Led Zeppelin
Béla Fleck and the Flecktones |

Saying that they'd be NOTHING without it? I think not. A huge aspect of their music would be missing, but if you're going by that definition, all disco and funk would be "nothing" without their bass players.

I'm sure they are all very talented but they would be something else (and possibly not as good), the bass lines defines them quite a lot. I agree that 'nothing' is perhaps the wrong word but too late for that now!
As for metallica, they are some good bass stuff in there but it can be pretty subtle so I think they could get quite far without a bassist (in general). I went for years thinking Fade to Black had no bass in it 'till I looked up the tabs. One of my favourite bass lines ever. |

I say every song sucks without the bass line, just as it would suck without the accompaniment to the melody (the guitars, horns, keys, etc.) and would likewise suck without the melody.
Drums, on the other hand...
(I kid of course)
