For me it is not so much of "I hate such and such" but, I just can not stand it when a band or singer uses their own name in a song. Just seems way to ecgotistigal for me

OK definitely Genesis, The Eagles, and Elvis Costello.

PS- As a huge Deadhead, I am not surprised to see them on this list. They are an acquired taste for sure. It helps if you saw them in person when Jerry was alive. But YMMV.

There's many artists I just don't pay any attention to, but few I don't like.
I'm no fan-boy of country music or hip-hop, but I don't dislike bands in those genres.

Led Zeppelin
Rolling Stones
Nirvana

Those I just don't like.

A 'maybe' for that list is The Who.

I'm sure they'd hate my band in turn. Meh.

It’s must be his persona – he always acts like he’s some little tough dude from NJ. (I guess now he’s some little old guy from NJ.)
There are more bands that I don't like than I do like.
Like someone else said, music is subjective. There are bands that I love that others hate. I can deal with that, but those same people can't deal with me not liking a band they love.

I like most music, my taste is eclectic, but there are bands/artists I just don't care for and never really liked anything I've heard by them.

Red Hot Chili Peppers tops the list, actually.

And I'm sorta split on Pearl Jam, but overall if I never heard another Pearl Jam song I'd be okay with it.

Others;

Steely Dan
Fleetwood Mac
The Eagles (although I like Don Henley's solo stuff)
John Mayer

There's a lot of varied music out there, and a good percentage of it is likely to not agree with any one individual. Not surprising.

What interests me is when a majority of my friends -- meaning those people whom I've known for a long time, spent many hours listening and playing all sorts of different styles of music together, folks whose music collection is closely aligned with mine, and whose taste and opinion I respect -- when those people as a whole appreciate and enjoy a particular band that is widely acknowledged as being influential and unique and groundbreaking and all that...

... but every time someone starts playing one of their songs around the campfire, I just find my heart isn't in it and I take that opportunity to go get a beer...

... even though I feel like I really SHOULD like them...

... for me that band is the Velvet Underground.

It's interesting to see all these bands that tbers hate.

Here's a little exercise, look at all these bands you hate and compare your music career to them.

A test of an exercise's validity is to apply it to different circumstances and see if it leads to a logical outcome.

Public success:Gangnam Style > Mozart's Requiem

It fails.

A persons tastes shouldn't be defined by the commercial success of the artists. There is nothing wrong with discussing opinion of what doesn't work in music as well as what does. It helps people hone the craft.

Came in here to post this. I do not understand the appeal.

To me, most of his songs sound very similar and most don't have a good hook. I don't get it.

Can I copy and paste this to a word document and re-post it (with reference to the quoter - you) whenever someone makes the "profitability = goodness assertion" in future conversations?

Actually, I listed The White Stripes in my original post earlier in the week.

Great "opinion-based" thread! I like that TB'ers are welcome to express their opinions freely without getted flamed by other TB'ers. Very cool!

Here is a list of music that induces vomiting for me:

Foreigner (my #1 yuck band, singer is awful, music swallows)
Lynyrd Skynyrd (save it for the tank top wearin Coors drinkers)
Bob Seger (major suckage)
Nickelback (who the hell let them into the recording studio???)
Eric Clapton (painfully bad, it actually hurts my ears)
Tom Petty (3rd grade level compositions)
Anything in the "rap" category (rap isn't actually music)
Anything in the "country western" category (drrr!)
Anything in the "blues" category (boring I-IV-V chord crap)
Any of the oversaturated bar chord tripe with youngsters who can't sing
Any singer who uses Autotune
Any of the trash on TV competition shows (American Idol, etc.)
Any doom, thrash, death, or metal (what a joke)
Any of the "big hair 80's" rock junk

All "IMO" of course!

Kudos to the OP for creating this excellent thread!

Agreed with Springsteen, The Offspring, and Coldplay.

Adding Guns and Roses, Metallica (after Cliff), Megadeth, Bob Seger, and most new country music.
