BANGERS???

Sign in to disble this ad
How come people always seem to refer to their 4-string basses as "4 Bangers"? Why? Are they particularly "banging" basses? In what way? Do "5 Bangers" exist? "6 Bangers"? I don't understand. Have I missed something here?

Feel free to flame and rant, BTW

Yes, its an automotive reference....unless you live in the UK, Australia, NZ, etc. in which case a "banger" is a sausage best served with "mash".

Which begs the question, how come people always seem to refer to their 4 cylinder cars as "4 Bangers"?

It's a car reference for sure

Yep, it's a referance to a four cylinder engine. The earlier american models made so much noise you could hear them half a block away and they made a very distinct rattling noise. Anyone who's ever owned a 80's Cavalier or Celebrity knows what I mean. Way before kids were installing coffee can exaust on them. Hence the term 4 banger. Why it relates to basses I don't know but, I refer to 4 string Basses as four bangers all the time.

Actually I think the term "4 banger" referred to 4-cylinders long before those cars (I did have one, by the way). The "bang" is the explosion that happens in each cylinder, right?

Where I come from the expression refers to what in polite company might be called "dirty pillows". Any more than two is generally considered undesirable, unless your name is Daisy or Fifi.

I like sausages more than cars. Basses before sausages though.

From what I was told by guys at the shop, the name comes from when the big V8's were popular in muscle cars and you had guys buying and trying to drag Toyota's and Honda's. It is in regard to the piston "bang" from the combustion. I have also heard six banger, never 8 banger though. Once had a BMW with the V12 in the shop, they called it a "Case Banger", but thats cause they are drunks......

IT is derived of the greek baangus, which is itself derived of mesapotamian baankuutz, which means "you have more than sufficient time on your hands to wonder things"

Bubble and Squeak before Bangers and Mash? HERESY!

You must tell me where Spotted Dick belongs in that hierarchy.
