Microsoft Publisher has a banner-maker as one of its templates.

Alternatively use Microsoft Word and enlarge the text to one letter per page, check the page order (twice) then start glueing.

Alternatively, how about writing on a flat surface that the audience can see - a drum skin for example?

I lvoe our banner. I got a huge king sized bed sheet, and folded it in half. Several times.

I made templated; capital letters consisting of 4 A4 pages opf card, every other letter 2 A4 pages.

I then sprayed over the templates, so that I'd have a white letter with a red outline. You can check it out here:

I wish I had made a template for "The". I'd forgotten to do so, and I couldnt be bothered going thru the hassle of making one joined up word... arrr! personally I think it's quite cool.

I had an old Speed Demons Skateboard Bearings banner that I didn't want, so we made a stencil of our logo and spray painted it. I'll see if I can find a pic somewhere...
