It is better for him, but not for you. It's a truly imbecil comparison. It amounts to nothing more than a pissing contest.

Best way to deal with this argument is to not argue. It stops pretty much after that.

And size doesn't matter so much...provided you know what to do with what you've got

How can one instrument be "better" than another? They're INSTRUMENTS. That's like saying a trombone is better than a xylophone, a knife is better than a fork.

+1

With the exception of the trombone

J/K! An instrument is an instrument! The guitar and bass fill different roles, and there is not a better one!

It's all about the leverage. With the longer neck you can generate more force with an over head swing to crush a guitards skull in one swat. Of course, once you commit to the swing you leave yourself wide open, so make sure you're standing behind the guitard and he's looking the other way. (Bright stage lights help here too.)

You can point out how he will look like a tool soloing with no one holding the bass line down.

But I would ignore it personally.

Just turn off your amp for a bit in practice, see if he starts looking around as if something crucial just disappeared out from under him.

If there's one thing a band cannot live without, it's a rhythm section. Remember that, and make sure he does too.

it's kind of like saying an alto sax is "better" than a baritone sax. or like a violin is "better" than a double bass.

if he actually thinks that for real, then it's not even worth the effort of arguing with him.

Tell him to go get another guitarist to replace the bass in the band. So how good (bad) the band sounds then.
