Bass fills/runs

May be a stupid question, but what goes into making a good fill? I've heard bassists play songs that I can play, but just with more fills and runs. I've tried emulating what they are playing during these runs, but have a hard time getting it right, sooo whats the best thing to do in hopes of spiffing up some simple songs with some groovin runs?

Just close your eyes and guess...

No, the secret to good fills is knowing chord/scale structures. In all honesty, no one's going to notice if you change a run. I've covered a few Coheed songs and Mic Todd (bassist) goes crazy. I either leave them out or figure the basic notes he's playing and just wing it.

I can usually sing a pretty decent bass fill. I just try to copy what I'm singing. If it doesn't work out, I try something else.

To quote the French foreign exchange student in the movie "Better Off Dead", "If something gets in your way, turn."

You wanna' ski the K-12, you're gonna' have to take some chances.

Peace and good vibes,
Joe
